Rebel Lenses

Hi everyone. I'm thinking of buying a Canon 5D Mark II (this baby). My mom currently has a Canon EOS Rebel (this one) and an old telephoto lens from a Canon film camera. Will her telephoto lens fit on my Mark II when I steal them from her? Are these lenses crappy compared to ones specifically made for Mark II lenses? Should I consider getting lenses?

If the old telephoto lens fits her Rebel, it will for your 5D.
But if it's a really old FD lens it won't fit her rebel or your 5D.

There aren't lenses specially made for the 5D, but there are more expensive lenses usually used with full frame cameras like your 5D.

I would consider getting lenses if your mom is going to get upset at you stealing them
But it depends how much money you have for lenses.
And what you want to photograph.

Can you say what lenses you're going to be borrowing from your mom?
And what you want to use them for?
That'll give a bit more idea for getting you the right information...

If the film telephoto fits the Rebel it will fit on the 5D. If it takes fairly decent photos with the Rebel it will be at least O.K. on the 5D because the 5D being Full Frame is 'similar' to a 35 mm film frame, at least the same size.

Some older film lenses, including the whole 'L' EF series that are built for the full frame image will produce fine results.

Just remember that the 5D MkII can easily show an imperfection in a lens that will not appear when it is used on the Rebel.

As Paul mentioned, your choices may need to be determined on what you wish to shoot. Then if your Mom wants to borrow your lens it will work fine on the smaller format sensor Rebel.

All it has to be is Ef compatible. But since the Rebel isn't full frame, you have to be aware of some vignetting at the edges.

I can't say for certain which lenses my mom has for her Rebel. All I know is that they fit on her camera and work perfectly.
I plan on using the camera for wildlife photography but it will also be my camera for "every day" use such as "oh my cat caught a mouse let's take an amazingly vibrant picture of him" or "let's take a beautifully crisp picture of Michael opening the Christmas present that I got him". Stuff like that.

EF compatiblility is the key. EF-S lenses will have vignetting and could even damage the mirror on the 5D Mk II. EF lenses shouldn't have any vignetting, though. They are all designed for the 35mm frame, after all. Some wide angle lenses might have some vignetting. But if they do, that just means they weren't designed very well.

You might want to take a look at the new EOS 7D, instead of the 5D Mk II. If wildlife is one of your main subjects, the 7D's better auto focus and the extra reach it offers due to the crop factor make it a better wildlife camera. You'll also save enough money with the 7D to buy yourself a proper lens instead of having to steal suspect lenses from your mom
