XTi shutter response problem!!!

My XTi has developed a problem where when I press the shutter button it may or may not take the photo right away. Sometimes it lags for just a second or two, sometimes it takes it instantly, and sometimes it just sits there like I'm not pressing it at all. I have tried with AF on and off (same results). I have tried with different Canon EF lenses (same results). I have tried with full range of ISO settings, metering settings, mode settings, etc... (same results). I have also confirmed that I have the latest firmware.

I have used this camera for 2 1/2 years without any problems until now....

Has anyone else experienced anything like this with a Canon DSLR?

My XTi is about the same age is yours, and I have yet to run into any problems like you describe. The only time I've had anything like this is during longer exposures, where the noise reduction is enabled or on auto (custom function), which is an expected response due to the noise reductions routines executing.

Some of the others may chime in with some ideas with what is happening.

BTW: what is your shutter count? If it is extremely high, it could be from wear and tear with the shutter sticking. This one is a shot in the dark (pardon the pun)

My shutter count is only around 7000.. wouldn't expect wear issues that soon...

It could be mechanical but since it's not consistent I'm thinking it's more something with the software side... I'm already shopping for either the 40d or 50d as a replacement (been planning to upgrade for a while)...

With a shutter count that low I would be surprised also if it was a wear issue also.

When it does work, are the pictures turning out ok? Are there any gradations within the picture (like dark areas) or inconsistent exposures within the picture?

What happens if you put the camera in continuous shooting mode and hold the shutter release for your 6-8 frames? Is the repetition consistent or does it seem to vary (of course I'm talking in the first few frame (first 5 or so) before the buffer gets filled and creates an expected delay).

Another long shot, would be your memory card. Have you tried a different one and/or done formatted/reformatted it in the camera? I'm not sure what impact a failing CF card would have, but inconsistency could be a symptom before failure.

Another thing you might want to try is doing a hard reset on your settings. I couldn't imagine what might cause this, but it might be worth a shot (again, pardon the pun).

I bought my XTi in June 2007 so approx. the same age as yours and one week ago it started showing the exact same problem!
Though I think that when I do the routine: press halfway for AF, then press on all the way for a photo and at the expected pressure (the one at which it triggered since new) it won't take a photo, BUT I noticed that a bit more pressure persuasion results in a shutter trigger! It is annoying as hell...
Is this also the case with yours?!

What do you recon is this a shutter problem or shutter button problem ?
Since we are out of warranty does anyone have any idea on repair price?!
