Sony DCR-SR82 1MP 60GB Hard Disk Drive Handycam Camcorder

Considering buying this camera, or the 30GB version, but I have some questions.

I'd be getting it to record live musical performances, so high quality audio is the highest priority. Also, I have a MAC, and I want to be sure it's compatible with non-PC computers. I don't think you can connect an external mic, which would be ideal.

Are there any other HD cameras in this price range that offer that? Thanks!!!

Not a bad camcorder. You can add an external mic if you buy the sony Hot shoe interface adapter, its a special adapter with a normal mini plug in that works with the smart shoe that's made to work with the sony add on mics. I just wish the HD cams recorded the audio in PCM and the video in DV25 (MiniDV compresseion), instead of MPEG on both. The video is compressed more and so is the audio as compared to the MiniDV or DV25 format.

Thanks so much for your reply. I really dread the thought of using miniDV tapes, but I hate the audio compression, especially because it's dynamic music. Excuse my ignorance, but what is the DV25 format? Is there another camera in the $600 range that has little or no compression on the audio?

DV25 is the compression format for MiniDV tape. So far, the best quality audio is still via the DV25 format since most of the cameras are capable of recording 16 bit PCM audio. (Two channels of 48 K sampled good stuff)

Where can I purchase the Hot Shoe Interface Adapter. I called Sony but you know the answer they gave me !!

Just FYI, the camera you mention is supported by iMovie '08. Just connect it with the USB cable and you're off and running. I do not believe it is supported by earlier versions, so if you bought your Mac (not MAC, that's another computer related thing ) before iLife '08 was included, you will want to pick that up.

If you decide to consider other models, this page on Apple's support site will show you the currently officially supported cameras for iMovie '08- just look under tapeless.
