Grounded

Hi all

Just to show I wasn't entirely lazy during my sabbatical from the web, here is something I did a month or so ago. It is the beach at Hastings (famous for the battle in 1066). I was after a sense of isolation and space.

A good enough shot but I have to admit that I do not get very much of a feeling of isolation and space due to how much the boat fills the frame.
Looks like it was a bit windy.

Everything always seems so perfectly placed in your pictures. I like the fact that there are two birds at the top of the mast. I wish I could see what is on the flags though.

The combination of a lovely sky, sea and shingle create a very peaceful environment for the grounded vessel. Nice colours in the boat itself and the fluttering black flags provide a bit of "life" in the calm surroundings.

There is nothing to critique on the picture and I love it by the way and it certainly gives a tranquil feel more than isolation for me, so I am going to critique the title ::rolleyes: - it should be beached purely because of the hawser holding the boat on the beach which is common on fishing vessels in that part of the country. The little line attached to the hawser has a buoy attached for picking up when comming in to beach. (well that's my brain emptied for the day).

The flags normally have nothing on them as they are pot markers for crabs, lobsters... On occasions they have a number on them.

Frog - probably true! It wasn't that windy really - the flags are very light.

gridtalker .. Hastings is on the south coast of England. It was where William the Conqueror landed in 1066AD in what is known as the Norman Invasion (indeed, the last time England has ever been invaded). There was a huge battle nearby between William and King Harold of England. Harold lost and William became king. It is as significant an event to English history as the Mayflower is to US history.

Greg - there was nothing on the flags at all - they were black and cut out of black plastic refuse sacks!

readingr - thanks for the details - we were curious as to the purpose of the flags. Your explanation makes more sense than the alternatives we came up with.

Nothing to critique, Mike. I always look forward to your posts. Your images have a certain look to them. WIsh I knew how you did it.

Mike , I think this is fine but my first impression is that the ship is a bit far too much over to the edge of the frame. I'm not feeling isolation or space in this scene, but it still is good.
