    Gotta hot tip today
This afternoon a friend called me and told me where to find a great photo opportunity. I grabbed the 40D, 100-400mm and the monopod and headed out the door. I had to hike a mile or two to find it, but his directions were spot on. This little fella let me get within about 10' of him.

I'm still trying to get use to a monopod, and this was my first real test with the IS on this lens. The IS saved a lot of shots today!

Mike, I am so jealous. I need a friend like that. I'd gladly hike a couple miles for a shot like that. Heck, I'd drive a couple hundred miles, for a shot like that. That will make a great notecard. Super job, buddy. You done great. That is so much better than my birds.

Excellent catch! And what terrific timing with you just receiving that 100-400mm. Made quite a test subject I'd say.

Thanks Mike. I could have stayed there and watched and photographed this little critter all day. He was so cooperative! I had (still do) too much stuff to get ready for our trip, and it felt like a storm was rolling in so I headed home after about an hour. I may go back for one more round this afternoon, or Monday after work if I get everything done that I need to.

Thanks Loupey. Yes, it was great timing to have the 100-400mm lens and this subject. Not only did the IS work great, but it also saved me the weight of leaving the tripod at home! I would much rather carry the carbon fiber monopod than the tripod. It makes a nice walking stick too. :)

Thanks for looking and commenting Byron.

No baby mammal I have seen can compare to the amazing cuteness of the red fox kit!

    AWESOME IMAGE!

Thanks Paul. I went back again today to check out this spot. There were two kits out today. I was sitting up against a tree, and one of them walked right behind me, about a foot away. Too close for a photo without scaring it away, but a very cool experience!

Thanks everyone for looking and commenting! I wish I had more time to spend at this location. I have a few days off when I get back from my trip and I'm hoping to spend some more time with these critters. Look for some more fox kit pics in a couple of weeks.

Yes, exactly! A monopod is perfect for field photography when IS is available. The other hidden benefit is that it can be viewed as a theft deterrent. I shoot mainly in urban metro parks alone, off the beaten paths, and in subdued light and I'm convinced that holding it like a staff makes me look like a not-so-easy target.

Congrats on the FP, along with congrats for this awesome shot. It looks like something you see with Text underneath of it in a doctors office, saying something like things aren't that bad.

    Mike,

I am still trying to find a co-operative fox. The only one's I see appear at dark.

Magnificent image and one of the best Fox pics I have seen in such a long time.

Feature photo is more than deserved.
