cropping question
I'd like to get some feedback on how much to crop this photo. If I go in to close, you lose the sense of how far off the ground the player is.

Re: cropping question
I would have opened the left side a bit, to show the corner of the goalpost and crossbar.
It gives more sense of where he is in the goal.
I don't think you've lost the height in that second crop.
We know how tall the goal is to the crossbar.
Well maybe we all don't :)
FA rules: The distance between the posts is 7.32m (8yds) and the distance from the lower edge of the crossbar to the ground is 2.44m (8ft).
Modifications:
Mini-Soccer: 12 feet wide x 6 feet high
Youth (11-14 age): 21 feet wide x 7 feet high
Youth (15-16 age): 24 feet wide x 8 feet high

Re: cropping question
nice shot, what are you shooting with? whats your set-up?
I probably would have cropped so you could just see the left post on the left and cropped the bottom so you would see the goal line...
i think your second shot still gives the photo a sense of the keepers positioning... but you may lose the impact of how good a shot was in terms of its positioning... so if your photo is trying to tell a story about the goalkeeper playing a good game then the second shot will work well, if you wanted to talk about the shot that beat the keeper then the first shot with a little cropping would tell the story that much better...
just my thoughts.

Re: cropping question
I replaced my old digital rebel with a 30D in February. I shoot with either a Sigma 70-200 2.8 APO DG or a Canon 70-200 4L.
That shot can be a little deceiving. The keeper actually saved it. He got a hand on the ball and when I snapped the picture it had already hit the cross bar and was going straight down. When the keeper landed he jumped on top of it and prevented it from going in.

Re: cropping question
I was quite surprised when I logged on yesterday to see this as the featured photo. How and who chooses the featured photo?
