Liberty

I was in NYC and toured the Statue of Liberty this week. Here are a few shots. I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions you care to make. The first one was taken with a D70 and 70-200 cropped to 8 x10 and leveled.

On this one, I wanted to show an angle most of us haven't seen. However, there may be a reason most of us haven't seen it.

This was taken from the viewing platform at the top of the pedestal. You can't see the whole statue, but you can see nice details, like this...

Finally, this crop of a flag on the island seemed appropriate...

wow! very nice LL! I especially like the flag and the close up under Lady's arm. I think the backside of her is interesting, i've never noticed her foot going out like that. And the first one is really neat :) maybe a little too many shadows... but i think that's one thing that makes the pic, that and the airplane :P I wonder what it would look like lightened up a bit

All great but it is the first one that really stands out, the lighting is perfect. I like the crop of your flag as well, extremely sharp.

Very nice, LL. I like the Flag and the last one best, but they are all very good. Congrats on the sticky. The plane in the sky really adds to it as well.

I can't believe no one else has stated this....

I am personally struck by the aparent image of the jet flying "into" the Lady. It brings up a pang of emotion inside of me. But at the same time...

The Lady is so much BIGGER than the jet that it lends the feeling of "We're stronger now, you can't hurt us as much as you did last time."

Just my emotional response to the photo. I wonder if anyone else felt the same?

i feel the same, and i feel it gives a "we were hurt, but we rebuilt and prved we are strong" sense. Kind of like what walterick said. Its the first thing i noticed about the shot. I wish there was just a tad more space on the left side of the shot. I feel the top is too open compared to the side.

Beautiful, beautiful work LL. The first image brought up so many emotions. Besides the poignant memories, your photography is stellar!

I saw the plane coming before I took the picture and felt what you said, Rick, although I could not have articulated it as well as you did.

Beyond the imagery, the journey to the statue really makes you reflect on our post 9/11 world. The ferry across requires bag x-rays and metal detectors. We went on a tour inside the pedestal (which requires advance reservations). You go through a second screening for that and cannot bring any bag of any type inside. You go through a metal detecctor, and anything you have in your pockets and your cameras and phones, etc. are x-rayed, and then you go through a sophisticated bomb detection device, like a big open MRI machine that puffs air on you and analyzes the data..

Once inside, you go on a tour and then to a viewing area atop the pedestal which gives great views of the Manhattan skyline and you can't help but notice the gap where the towers used to be. As you come down off the pedestal, you may notice a bomb-sniffing dog and policeman in SWAT-type gear.

We spent a lot of time in the Times Square area and police were everywhere -- some of them in riot helmets, flak jackets, and toting sub-machine guns.
