Lady Liberty, New York Harbor.

I've been getting together some small panos 6x16.
this was taken recently, the grain and post processing is to be obvious.
how does this look?

As usual, I'm very impressed. I think the grain looks good with the overcast sky. My only complaint, and it's very minor, is the stern of the sailboat blends in with the background. Just my opinion.

The clouds remind me here of the smoke from 9/11. I don't find it to be your most compelling photograph, but I bet I would like it bigger.

I am a rather patriotic kind of guy so I like this photograph Gary.
The composition is excellent.
The balance from Lady Liberty and the tall ship ROCKS!
I like the grain, but I think it would be far better of a photograph if it were in color.
I'd LOVE to see those flags on the horizion pop more!
I am not much on doing a lot of 'post processing", so that doesn't sit too well with me either. But you know that.. :rolleyes:

I think it looks good. IMO - I would like to see alittle bit more water. The clouds kind of blend in too much. Looks like an old photograph that needs some title. I think the grain looks fine it matches what the water looks like and makes it feel older.

Thanks Paul, LavaLamp, Brian , and Themage. I thought about what Brian said and decided to give the original colored version a go at. I found that i was pleased with it, and although I really am fond of the gritty B&W version, I find myself liking the original ( color version) more.
What do you think?

Hi Gary,

I'm usually not into strong manipulations, but I like the 3D quality of this technique. Looking at the clouds reminds me of looking at a coin detail. So, I think that works great.

What I'm not that crazy about is the image aspect ratio. It reminds me too much of a internet banner and I want to not look at it thinking advertisement. I'd probably feel very different about it if I saw a proper print.

BTW, did you shoot that schooner from Elis Island? I have a similar shot of an old ketch beating up to the Statue of Liberty.

Gary, I like your composition and the particular crop used here. I don't know if I prefer this in b&w or in color. The b&w picture almost have an antique feel to it due to the grain and the old fashioned boat. The clouds are quite strange though. They almost seem drawn. Intersting for sure but not really natural.

The color version is nice too. The colors look really good but still, I don't get the feel that this shot beg to be in colors.

Either way, this is a good photograph. I am curious to see your others panos.

i like the b&w more then the color.

I looked at this picture in passing a few days ago and thought it was very predictable and uninteresting in Black and White. I LOVE it in color. I didn't even realize much the back ground detail which looked muddy before. The line of flags make for some good background detail. Much better!!!

Tim, this was shot from Red Hook, Brooklyn.

I like the colour one better. The B&W one is too grainy for my liking. I really enjoy the blue brown tones of the other one.

You already know that I prefer the colored version. I'm really excited to see that this made featured photo. I would've thought that MTBrian would have used the color version from his later reply. Either way Congratulations Gar... :cool:

Gary wow. Both are great representations. I think I would like the b/w as b/w with not as much grain thrown in. The color version is equally impressive.
I could see this being snapped up so quickly in one of your exhibits!

I like the color better.

I prefer the black and white better. I did learn a good lesson with this picture. Some people liked the B&W, some the color. It's amazing how people can see the same picture and get different opinions. That's what's great about photography. Either way it's a great picture. Great work!

Thanks for the replies, all. An interesting thread this has been. In-His-Image yes, I always find it so interesting how evryone sees things differently and the wide range of perspectives and preferences.
