    Removing background from images
    Hi,

I am designing a catalog however the photos have a background, for
example the pictures are of shoes but i can see the table the shoe is
sitting on and the background behind the shoe, is there a way to cut
the shoes out in Photoshop so the background is removed?

    Thanks

Do you have any sample images you could post? If you're trying to get the shoes on a clean white background you could also get that done with well placed lights so you won't have to cut them out in photoshop.

The short answer to your question is yes, there are several ways to do exactly that. Photoshop provides a variety of methods for making selections, which is the first step in your process.

However, which method is best for any given situation depends largely on several different factors within the image itself, and should be done on a case-by-case basis. But, you never know. We might get lucky and find an easy method that works for all of them. But, as Scott suggests, we'd have to see 3 or 4 sample images to find out.

    Removing background from images
I am finding this too hard, I googled and found some companies that do this sort of thing, has anyone tried them? Is clipping path the same as deepetching. http://www.deepetch.com seems to be one good one, I also saw http://www.rapidclipping.com/Photosh...pping/home.htm and http://www.ezyclipping.com. Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing. My catalog has over 300 images of jewelery and jackets with fur fitted on manequins due in two weeks, all shot on a blue studio background. Do I require alpha channel masking? Can anyone help please?

Whenever we have hair or fur to mask out, we always have our vendor or our digital imaging staff put an alpha channel mask on the image. You will get a much cleaner and natural looking selection. I have practiced on a few images, but have never done anything on a large scale. Scott Kelby's Channels book has a chapter on using alpha channels for making selections.

You might like to have a look at Adobe Fluid Mask Plugin. It is a download costing $129US.

I used to do deep etching using a copy camera with registration pin masking on both Kodak Kodalith Type 3 and Kodak Pro Copy film. Physically removing backgrounds on paper prints using scalpels and painting out negatives using colloidal graphite and Dupont Gold Tape.

The Fluid Mask Plugin is certainly the go nowadays. You will find the Plugin download links on the Adobe Photoshop site, and also on the Adobe Lightroom 2 Tutorial site.
