After I edit a picture in LightRoom is there a way to keep a copy of the original in the file?

The original is still there. Lightroom is a non-destructive editing environment.

A 'virtual' copy (they are all virtual really) can be created even after editing by selecting the photo in question and selecting Create Virtual Copy from the Photo Menu or more simply by typing the command Ctrl + '.

Then with the virtual copy you can Reset it to the unedited state and your changes will remain on the edited version.

That's one way to do it. You can also save a 'snapshot' of the image and then reset it too. The virtual copy method is one I use all the time and sometimes have dozens of Virtual Copies that have all different types of adjustments, crops, etc.

I usually start by making a Virtual copy and then editing that one! It doesn't really matter as Lightroom does not change the original RAW or other file type.
