Lightroom 2.5 update

Released today, supports E-P1 ... hoooray!

No more shooting raw+jpg, now I can shoot raw only :)

Yes, inclused Adobe camerra Raw (ACR) v5.5 with some new cameras.

Sonyphiles - ACRv5.5 does not include the A500/550 or A850, but LR 2.5 does include the Sony/Minolta lens data base for the first time!

Lightroom users who also use Photoshop and can will want to update their ACR to 5.5. It isn't an absolute necessity, however, under certain circumstances their may be a noticeable difference in color shifts with different versions of Adobe's Raw converter running.

Older versions of PS are, as usual, are left out of the update path.

I don't think ACR 5.x works with PS CS2.
We're stuck with older technology ?

You will have to use the Olympus software to render the RAW or convert to DNG. - TF

Nope, I can use Lightroom 2.5 which is my whole point for posting the note about the release. I don't need to convert to another format and have duplicate copies of my images.

Exactly! Each Lightroom upgrade/version contains the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw conversions.

The ACR add on is for Photoshop Users to get the same functionality for new cameras or changes for older ones. In ACR 5.5 there are changes for the often mentioned 'green' problems in some cameras based on mostly Sony sensors. ACR upgrades when applicable to a particular version of Adobe Photoshop aid in reflecting changes performed in LR but should not be 're-done' in Photoshop as the RAW conversion has already been made! Same engine.

I thought that LR specifically did not use ACR but has a different raw technology that was closely related. Otherwise there would not need to be separate releases.
I picked that up from LR development at some point and must check my reference to make sure.

When sending an image from LRv2.5 to CS4 that still had ACRv5.4, a pop up box questions whether you want to 'Update CS4 to ACR5.5', 'Continue and Open in CS4' or 'Open Using Lightroom'. Are you sure that LR has already rendered the file? - TF

Yes, LR has 'rendered' the file. That's why the upgrade to 5.5 AND using 'Maximum Compatibility options' for files.

I will write up the 'dirty' details later this evening as there's lots of confusion about how these programs interact, and widely divergent information available.

The first versions of Lightroom both 1.0 and 2.0 built advanced tables but often included the original data from previous ACR where the engineer didn't think it was necessary for a change.

LR's RAW capability is an 'all-in-one' and because it uses a different color space than PS there's some confusion. They, PS and LR use the same profiles, custom or standard and can pass changes via sidecar files.

Adobe has tons of reference material to wade through (thus how long it took me to get back to this!) and one of the most current references to the RAW conversions using the same technology/engine can be found on this web page from ADOBE:

There are references I have marked or copies of that go back to CS2 and the engine for RAW being the same. Lot of early beta info that may no longer apply as well as notes from LR 1.x.

There is a difference in color space and gamma implementations between various products, but that is separate from the conversion of the Camera RAW. An example is that you can alter the color profiles for any given camera and settings and install those new version in Lightroom.
