This forum is for artists who use a camera to express themselves. If your primary concern is meaning and symbolism in photography, then you've come to the right place. Please respect other
community members and their opinions when discussing the meaning of "art" or meaning in images. If you'd like to discuss one of your photos, please upload it to the photo gallery, and include a link to that gallery page in your post. Moderators: Irakly Shanidze, Megan, Asylum Steve
If you don't know than we can't tell you. Art is subjective. One man's trash is another's treasure. The questions you should ask are, "Do you think my art is worth while? Does it evoke an emotional response in you? What are the merrits of my art peice? What could I do to improve it?" To simply ask if it is art tells me that it was not created to be art, and if you do not think it is art then your posting it here is pointless.
The point of this forum is to discuss art. To revel in the beauty of art. To share ways to improve art, and techniques for creating art. What you need to ask yourself is wether or not you are a creator of art, not if what you have created happens to be art.

beautiful colors on the girl...the limes and reds and coppers. good concept...nice execution.
"I was not trying to be shocking, or to be a pioneer.
I wasn't trying to change society, or to be ahead of my time.
I didn't think of myself as liberated, and I don't believe that I did anything important.
I was just myself. I didn't know any other way to be, or any other way to live.".
Welcome to the forum Kalypso. I really like the concept and the image that you have created here. The skin tones and the expresion are beautiful. My only knit pick is that I find the bevel around the outer edge of the mirror to be distracting. Perhaps a mirror without the beveled edge would help to keep the lines in the reflections flowing smoothly. A very nice image!
"I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters' paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view."

I once thought this image was a portrait...now, I think it is art. Not because I'm a great artist...it's because she is so beautiful. I'm sure I could have done better with the lighting & stuff but I'm not too sure about this one...
I would consider it art. The message it conveys to me is that as individuals our own self image is often dulled and we don't appreciate ourselves enough. But that's just me...
Doug, I gotta call you on this!
I have looked at you're stuffit.Blog. All of the pics there are "Pro Beautifull" ad quality portraits.
What'd you do, suffer a crissis?
Anyway you have a lot of expirience and expertise to share here.
For example, I like how you hid the dress straps with hair in you're second post, and the the lighting is quite dramatic. also the bg and the dress are similar making the flesh and hair stand out.
I would like to know the lighting setup and you're thougts while setting this shot up.
You're good, show me more and explain,
Mark.

Thanks...not too sure about the "ad quality" though! No crisis, just took a break for a while. I shoot for fun so it didn't cost me anything.
Lighting on the second shot was: Main light was a 150W Halogen hot light reflecting off a 45" silver umbrella with a 14" gold disc placed under the upper ribs. On a light stand about 40 degrees to my right and about 3ft over her, aimed down at a 45 degree angle. Fill light was a Vivitar 285HV at 3/4 power shooting through a 45" white, translucent umbrella. Placed about a foot above (her) eye level, to the cameras immediate left from 2 feet away. I also placed a cheap Quantaray slave flash on the floor behind her aimed upwards toward her side (she was sitting on a 48 quart Igloo cooler). So much for my fancy "studio" lighting, lol!
Now, what was I thinking? Actually, not a whole lot...Jessica & I had worked together almost weekly for close to a year & we were so used to each other that once we got the outfit & placement set, she would pretty much switch from one look to the next with very little guidance from me. At the time, I probably told her to shake her hair out in front & she provided that look.
Close to the same lighting here...except the fill was bounced off a white umbrella & no back slave. Both were taken with a Minolta Dimage 7i.
