Is there any merit in this?

As usual, I worked this until I liked it. But does it work?

I kinda like it. I think I might like more vibrant colors...hard to say.

In other news, your other photo reminds me of Venus de Milo. It's been in my head all week, and I finally figured it out.

I completely forgot. Yeah, y'know, that's what I think I saw when I first created it ... which is why it caused me such controversy. It screamed out to me "SCULPTURE IN AN ART MUSEUM!", while at the same time it was ... well ... me. I didn't really know what to think.

I'm sorry that it was in your head all week, though ... that can't have been pleasant.

    Hi Kelly,

I'd like you to elaborate on this statement. If you mean that your photo appeared like something else you saw, so what?

Recently I critiqued a photo on another site. The poster liked my critique and posted another pictures. Someone else responded that wasn't what I meant in my critique. I responded that's exactly what I meant compositionally. The difference between shots was the subject matter. IOW, I can find similarities between works. I also don't think this takes away anything from either or any piece.

I've come to the conlcusion that the only person I need to please is me (unless it's a paid job:-)). For instance, I did a figure study my wife really dislikes. A friend of mine who puts on art shows loved it and she asked me to put it in an upcoming show. Niether person is right or wrong. I was pleased with the shot and that's what matters to me. If we were trying to please the majority of people we'd be doing tk's.

Conversely, I have no qualms with taking post card shots. My question to people who do have this problem is why? If the shot presents itself to me I'd be silly not to take it.

    Mike

PS: I'm sorry if I'm way off from what you meant!!!

Re: Is there any merit in this?

MIke, I appreciate your points and the direction you're taking this. What Adina was talking about is a nude I shot of myself that I showed her, and the responses I've gotten from the people I've personally shown it to (where I can watch their reaction) is at first complete and utter silence for a long, noticeable period of time. After the silence, the three responses have been: "I like it", "Oh", and "I don't like it". Those I've emailed it to have overwhelmingly responded positively.

What I was talking about is the reaction *I* first had when I completed my work on it. My reaction was, "I like this, but it's also somewhat shocking." And I'm not sure if the shock part of it was because it was me, a self-esteem thing. And so my series has turned into a study of the process of self-discovery and acceptance.

It's not always enough that I like something myself, although it's becoming more and more important as I gain confidence. But I do want to know that I'm not alone.

    Thanks for responding!

I can understand this and went through the same dilema. Maybe we all did? To a degree, I still struggle with it. Especially if I really like a photo and nobody else seems to! I still like to seek out different opinions on my work. For various reasons I just rarely do it on line anymore.

    Was I the "Oh"?

If you do display it, let me know where. I'd love to see it in big print. Canvas would probably look good.

    Hey, I deserve credit...

...as your location scout! That has to be one of the coolest hydrants I've seen. Your treatment is pretty interesting. Would be much more abstract if those bright metal nuts didn't stand out as much...

I have my shot of this too. Just haven't figured out what to do with it yet...

Oh yes, of course! Steve gets all the credit for being my location scout. I would have walked right by if he hadn't have stopped for his own shot.

I look forward to seeing what you do with yours, Steve. Blow me away, as usual!
