I shot this a little over a week ago. I really like the potential that it had. I wish it had more depth of field.

Axle I see yours now, great B&W an eerie feel to it.

Hector - love the wood grain and the overall shot. To me, it would be improved if it didn't have the bright area on the left (can't tell what it is) and if it had better separation from the background (small light behind???). – TF

The bright spot is the light that went in through the right F hole and is coming out of the left F hole. On the color version you can almost make out the serial number. :D

Are you saying that I should illuminate the background so it shows up more?

What I was thinking was to have a light behind that shines on the back of the subject. This creates a sort of halo effect that outlines and brings it forward from the background. I am certainly no expert at still photography (or any other actually) and this may not work, but if it does... - TF

A.M.D.A. your tones (light & dark) are great wish I could get that in mine? Compared to yours mine seem washed out and to think I thought they were OK...back to the drawing board. What am I doing wrong? Cheers, S

Well, I actually think your B&W tones look very nice. :)

I have still a long way to go in getting tones like some of the others here, but since you asked, here's how I do it:

There are three tools I usually use, for converting to B&W.
#1. Channel Mixer. Select "Monochrome", and adjust the sliders for red/blue/green to obtain the best hues.
#2. Levels.
#3. Curves.

Then the other "regular" edits, like sharpening, cropping, etc.. Also some "vignette".

If you like, I can re-create one of these shots I posted here with a more detailed walk-through, over in the PP forum.

I recently bought a few rolls of bw film, just to try out film. Still haven't shot anything as I have to get some new batteries for the cam. I'll post some if I take anything good, or I don't mess up the film somehow.

I've walked past this strange tree for a few years now.

Never photographed it until this morning.
