any brave souls try vista yet (specifically 64 bit vista)?

I should have bought a Mac Pro desktop and tricked it out, but no, I decided that I'll just beef up my old desktop pc with a quad core cpu, new mobo, and geforce 8800, and install vista 64 and keep my old programs. My wife is laughing at me as she cruises painlessly on her Macbook Pro
No support for my canon scanner, hp printer, olympus dye sub printer. ACDsee won't run, adobe cs suite won't run, and worst, mcaffee won't install. The only apps that would install are games (!), and of course, Office 2003. I HATE microsoft. I hope Vista sucks so badly that MS goes down the drain-quickly.:thumbsup:

ROTFLMAO--- As I too write this on my MacBook Pro. In my family, the problem is reversed, my wife just got Vista on her laptop and can't connect to anything. I feel your pain on the homefront.

Support for peripherals for a new OS is always a problem. This is especially true for 64-bit systems that usually require more work for very few customers. Remember, its up to the peripheral makers to support their own products. Microsoft can only distribute what they have. Besides, look at Apple. they laughed that Vista took so long yet iTunes doesn't run on it!

This is why I always tell everyone that being a first adopter of anything is a bad, bad idea. But look on the bright side! If you buy a MacIntel, it will run Vista faster and more beautifully than MacOS!

I'm supposed to get my mom a new PC in the next week or so. We waited until Vista was out so that we won't have to upgrade later. Her system should be simpler than most - I hope. And it's a good way for me to wade into it without having to ruin my own system. I'll post something when I've had my hands on it.

Don't worry about it. The school has rolled out about 25 computers with Vista that use existing hardware. There have been no problems. An OEM installed version should work fine. But, you are planning to be a first adopter so...

I await the results of people with sacrificial computers running Vista.
I know enough to wait until at least the first (or usually second) service pack.

I hear Outlook 2007 is dog slow, and hates attachments.
So no way will I touch that with a bargepole.

It's not like I have enough CPU speed to waste on pretty graphic fripperies instead of real work...

Darn, I thought Vista was still coming! :blush2: In any way, I'll still wait. I'm busy buying a new house now therefore that's top of my list till I'm eventually in it in a month or threes time. I'll also buy Unreal Tournament 2007 long before Vista!

I did some beta testing at the onset and it was so full of bugs that I gave up. A friend tested the newer versions and likes it. But I wont buy for at least a year or longer. It's too expensive to have to put up with patch after patch, IMHO.

I dual booted my computer so XP is still intact. I re-installed using the 32 bit version, but now I'm giving up the ability to map all my available RAM. It does however allow more of my apps to run, even photoshop (grudgingly, slowly, with agonizingly slow window refreshes). Outlook however, can't find my contact list when composing new mail even though the list is intact any other time. ACDsee still won't install, and McAfee installed but is non functional (no right click menu to run scans). Printers and scanners still don't work, but at least my modem is back on line. Guess I'll just keep working it till it finally works, but I'll do all my work in XP until it does.

One of the first things I noticed about Vista is that apps written for prior Windows OS through XP won't run or will run in limited capacity so I instantly decided there was no way I'd go to using it. I'm not going to buy all new software to please Microsoft and other software makers.
I did hear that sales were WAY down from what MS expected, and that until they pick up they will loose money
For most of the working photogs here they would need the most expensive version to really make the change worth it...another reason I won't "upgrade", it isn't worth $500. I'd buy a Mac first now, and thats saying a lot. I have never been a fan of Mac's, but I may have to bite the bullet. If I am going to make a change like this I am going to change everything.

No, but I'm considering upgrading to WinXP. Heard it's not too bad...

Got my new machine on Friday last week and have been able to load up all my applications (CS2, Spyder, etc) and drivers for everything except an old HP printer, but since the house is networked, I can add it to another machine via a wireless print server so no biggy.

This includes two external harddrives, a Gig router, a NAS device, and media server - all added with no trouble.

Was able to down load my NIK filters and Kodak filters ok (but to use Kodak I have to run CS2 under admin mode).

The online lab I use (LustreColor) downloaded ok.

Outlook (03) keeps asking me to accept the license everytime I use it but 1 extra mouse click never hurt anyone.

So far that is all, except to say that is boots faster, loads CS2 faster, and looks cooler, the networking/sharing software is great.

No real complaints (yet!)

This is exactly the experience we are having at the school. No major glitches at all, no Outlook "slowness", no problems with the mainline apps such as PS CS. But I still won't trust it until its been out a couple of months. Go figure!
