    Resizing and quality
Using a program like Irfanview, or any other image editing software, does resizing a digital image either smaller or larger, in any way degrade the quality of the resized image if the picture was taken at the best resolutuion? Thank you.

This is an EXCELLENT question - something I've been battling with since pa fell of the bus.
Resizing an image smaller most definately, well in my case in any way, degrades the image. And I really don't know what to do. I wish someone would tell me how one resizes an image smaller without degrading it.

That is definitely with an i but here is how you resize an image downward without losing quality. In the image size menu in the document size area it shows 72 pixels per inch. That is the print resolution of your image.

At the bottom turn Resample Image OFF. (It is ON by default). Then type in a higher pixels per inch resolution and it will reduce the width and height to match the higher resolution. (Constrain proportion is left ON)

What you are trying to do is get the width and height down to the size you want while at the same time keeping the print resolution high.

Thanks for the help Ronnoco but I don't understand what you're trying to tell me.
What application or program do you do these things in? I've got Irfanview, Photoshop 7, Picasa and something called Faststone (or something like that). I'm not at home at the moment. Paint of course, also resizes images.

Photoshop 7 in the Image resize menu is where you start. It also works in Paint Shop Pro.

I checked it out in Photoshop 6 and it works in Image Size with unchecking RESAMPLE and then typing in a higher resolution in the pixels per inch area as I indicated.

Thanks. I'll give that a try.
