Nikon's PictureProject 1.7

Just received my new D40 and I have a PC 100 w/Intel PIII which is fast enough but I run win98se b/c I do not like hype to rule. Thing is Nikon's PictureProject 1.7 software is only compatible w/ Windows 2000 or higher. Is Picture Project worth upgrading my OS for. Are there alternatives? I am new to digital photography but not new to photography :idea: FYI there is a question about Picture Project compatibility w/ OS X. How good is this PictureProject 1.7?

It's acceptable- as free software bundled with the camera. You can view photos, read Exif data, prepare photos for e-mail, even burn cd's. It's good for all of that. I can't comment on it's organizational capablities as I've not heard anything either way.

As an image editor, if leaves much to be desired- in my opinion anyway. Specifically, the ability to alter white balance and exposure in Raw images is something I find necessary that Picture Perfect doesn't provide.

Do not though that I am biased in my opinion. I've been using Photoshop forever and have grown accustomed to it's capablities. I realize that not everyone can afford to fork over the kind of money that a full featured editor requires. However, for a minimal investment, you can aquire an editor that exceeds Picture Perfect's limitations. And isn't the ability to create better photos what it's all about?
