    NEF and Photoshop CS

What do I need to do to open .NEF files and edit in .RAW format in Photoshop CS?

Is it possible to convert NEF files to RAW?

If I upgrade to CS-2, would this be a solution?

    Thank you in advance.

    Paul.

    Re: NEF and Photoshop CS

NEF files are RAW files. RAW files from different cameras have different extensions (.nef = Nikon, .raf = Fuji, etc). What you need to open a RAW file in Photoshop depends on which camera you have.

All RAW files are camera specific here, so if your version of Photoshop doesn't open your RAW files, maybe the camera is newer than Photoshop CS. If you upgrade to CS2 that should take care of that problem, but check the list of supported cameras first to be sure.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm using a Nikon D50 and CS won't open this files. I also have a Nikon CP5000, which CS handles very well. I enjoy the control of working in RAW, so I'm anxious to apply this to NEF files as well. I'll take your advice and check with Adobe.

    Regards, Paul.

CS came with RAW conversion get the latest raw conversion file from Adobe and put it in, in place of the current version, unless you want to pay $149US for the upgrade from B&HPhotoVideo.

    Re: NEF and Photoshop CS

Hi Peter, thanks for your reply.
I have placed the RAW Adobe file in the proper CS folder, and get the following message:

"Could not complete your request because this version of PhotoShop does not supply the services required by this plug-in module."

I havde downloaded the proper "CS" zip file. Funny thing is, I used to be able to open .nef files in CS, but not any more.

Any suggestions other than re-installing CS?

    Regards, Paul.

    Re: NEF and Photoshop CS

I'd just remove and re-install CS. I didn't check Adobe's site, but CS2 probably will need an update to work with a camera as new as the D50. They release these updates from time to time as new cameras come out.

I've got a 5000 too, and it works great in CS. Actually I don't shoot that camera in RAW too often, but it's great to have the option.

I was afraid that would be the solution! I may decide to upgrade to CS2 instead. I went to Adobe's site, but could not find an upgrade page, but I'm sure it's there somewhere.

Yes, the CP5K is a great camera. I have the wide-angle adaptor since I do a lot of landscape and interior small room shots. We run a B&B, so it's been valuable in that regard. I hope I'm going to enjoy the D50 as much. It's so tough making a decision these days on what brand, model, lenses, to purchase cuz there's such a choice of good equipment out there.

If you're interested in canoeing, there's a link called, "Barron Canyon solo canoe trip" with pics taken last Fall with the CP5K. Nothing very good, weather was mostly wet and cloudy.

Appreciate the help I've received here.

    Best regards, Paul.

Cool (pun intended)! I've used mine on sea kayaking trips, with the wide adapter too.

You will need to re-install CS, then install the CS2 upgrade. I didn't see it right away, but there's a tab at the top of the page for "Upgrade Option". This link should get you there.

But you don't need to upgrade if you get the Adobe Capture RAW upgrade which is free, I gave you the link for it in my other post. Which directory did you install it into, on my system it is in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS2\File Formats directory. Maybe you put it in the wrong directory.

Sorry to take this long in responding, Peter. I don't have "common files" directory on my system. Could be that's one of my problems. I've uninstalled CS, and will reinstall PS7 and the upgrade to CS, which was a download from the Adobe site. I hope this will fix my problem!
I have been enjoying getting used to my new D50. Very pleased so far.
Thanks to all of you for your help.
    Regards, Paul in Haliburton.
