Editing firmware... or maybe something else.

Hey guys, I've been working with my (extremely cheap) gateway DC-T50, and have wanted to do some astrophotography. Problem is, with this camera (and I figure, most point-and-shoot cameras), I can't do more than a .5 second shot, while I'm hoping for something longer.
So, my question is - is there some place that I can get edited firmware, or is there some program that I can buy that I can edit it with, or is this whole idea not possible?
    Thanks

Not all cameras support hacked/edited firmware. The only camera I am aware of that supported that was the Canon Digital Rebel.

If you do find one, please be aware that installing one could void your warranty.

Yeah, I don't care about that, I got it real cheap on ebay, so the warranty probably isn't valid anyways.
