CPU temperature

I finished building my E6600 based computer a few days ago. I captured and edited my first home movie in Sony Vegas but while rendering the CPU temp jumped to mid 70s. The mother board and MB software starting beeping with warnings of the temperature.

I have the CPU fan and two case fans (push/pull) already and I don't think I have anymore room for more fans.

I didn't realize a CPU running in the mid 70s was a no no....

Anyone have advice for me?

I'm no expert but I have heard multiple times that the seal between the CPU and the cooling structure (those "fins" attached to the CPU) are critical. Too thick, too thin, or not uniform can have a huge effect on CPU temperatures. You might want to reseat and reseal the CPU/cooling fins.

If the CPU and FAN were provided fitted together with the motherboard, I'd take it back.
There could be a BIOS problem not changing the fan speed.
The point of the temperature sensor, apart from not melting your silicon, is to allow the computer to run quieter by altering the fan speed to match the CPU heat generation.
If your fan always runs at the same speed, then it may not be working right.
