Batch RAW to JPG conversions in CS... help meh

I have a need to convert a ton of RAWs to JPGs in CS, all at once...

They don't need to be adjusted individually, I can just apply the same basic adjustments to all of them.

Problem is... I am not figuring out how to do this. I might have to do several hundred images all at once.

Anyone know a good way to go about this? Do I flag the images, and then covert them folder by folder?

If someone's done this before, it'd be great if you'd help me out.

Why not just extract the JPEGS stored in the RAW files? File Viewr Utility lets you do that right from the file menu.

I'll try both... But Sebastian, i don't see where to extract a JPG from it in the File Viewer anywhere... I must be missing something.

To extract the embedded jpeg from a RAW file, in the File Viewer, with a thumbnail highlighted, pull down FILE>SAVE FILE>Extract Save JPEG...

Thanks Steve, you beat me to it. Sean, like Steve alludes, the RAW files have to be selected before the JPEGS can be extracted.

Here's what I see. RAW thumbnail highlighted, File Menu pulled down... I don't see the extract command anywhere in the viewer... :

Hehe...you're in Photoshop, that's your mistake. :)

The function is in File Viewer Utility, the program that came with the 10D.

Took me a while to set up an action for this, but I finally did it. Just took the RAWS straight to JPG. Those actions can be tricky... at first, each time it would just open the same file over and over when I tried to batch, until I figured out that I don't have to have a "open" command in a batch.

Anyways, I converted about 4500 raws yesterday, then renamed them all and seperated them out. No more RAWs for me, I'm sticking to jpg just for ease of use.

Using the File Viwer Utility in your workflow makes RAW just as easy as JPG. Still don't understand why you went through the trouble of setting up an action for seomthing that a program you have already does? Does the action give you anything that FVU doesn't? I didn't look into the action for conversion at all, so I don't know if there is any benefit or not. If there is though, then I would consider it to eliminate FVU from my workflow.

I do not have the canon file viewer installed, nor do I have the CD's, nor would I install it if I did.

I fould it to be a clunky, slow to respond, inadequate program. I use ThumbsPlus 6 and Photoshop CS for all my imaging. That's just how I felt about File Veiwer, of course. Maybe Thumbs spoiled me, but it responds lightning fast, is quick in all of it's actions with both RAW and jpg's, and in conjunction with the PS raw editor I am able to do everything I need. The FVU was totally frustrating to me.

I had never needed to convert lots of files before this. I have a client who wants a web gallery of all my shots so he can use it as a photobank to sell to his clients, and I had 4500 RAWS that I had no way of quickly making a online gallery of. I am using JPG now because all the shots are gonna be used in a photobank I am making for use in website design... those realtors, they love to have pictures of golf courses in their sites ;)

For some reason I thought you were using the File Viewer. That's the only reason I gave the advice that I did. Then I reread the thread and realized it was Penny who first metioned the program. Sorry about that...

I agree that PS CS is much better for processing RAW files. I uninstalled the Canon software once I upgraded to CS. However, if there is one thing that the File Viewer does very easily and very well, it's extract the embedded jpegs.

Still, if you figured out an action to do the job for you in PS without too much hassle, so much the better...

Try this little baby - Dr. Brown's Image Processor - it's a neat CS-only script. It lets you make batch adjustments to a group of RAW images AND convert them all at the same time to TIFF or jpeg or even PSDs.
