Adobe to launch web-based Photoshop...

This seems to be in line with the latest trend of web-based programs that some forecast as a soon-to-be very viable alternative to hard drive based software.

So, what do you think of a basic (watered down) version of ps being available to use any time any place you can connect to the web?

I see workplace productivity going down for photogs with regular jobs. :)

9 to 5'ers are simply going to have to choose between messing around in photoshop or playing video games. Workplace productivity should stay about the same... :D

I think it will depend upon the features bundled with the package and how it is marketed. Most people I know who use Photoshop professionally tend to prefer their own workstation, particularly in the area of color management, as the workstation is set up to be color-neutral.

One area I believe they may be able to carve a marketshare in is with Elements users who occasionally need to perform a function outside the (current) range of Elements, though not often enough to justify spending the money of the full-blown version. Capturing that market will depend largely on features offered and ease of use, in addition to any fee schedules.

Generally speaking, I see this as a good idea, though not one that I am likely to use.

I agree. I doubt this would have many benefits for pros. At this point, the only thing I can think of would be maybe renting a laptop as part of a shoot, and if it didn't have ps installed, it would be nice to have access to some basic editing tools that you could get online...

I want total control over the whole process. Using a web based version of PS would eliminate that. Why would I want to subscribe to something like that? For amatuers, sure, maybe that's a good thing, but for me? I don't think so. I'll continue to pony up my 169.00 to upgrade PS whenever they come out with new versions. That be my two cents anyway!

I can't imagine you would. From what I've read, this is not being marketed towards pros at all. Rather, it's for the mass consumer, maybe those who might be a little intimidated by the full version of ps and hesitant to buy it.

I think the idea is to give them a taste of the basic tools, then eventually sell them an hd based version...

Don't forget browsing the Web. I'm not telling on anybody, but most of the action here and on other community sites happens while people are at the office. Keep up the good work :thumbsup:

Yeah I agree! Specially with us we are working in a graphic design company and PS is the major software that we used, and since we offer a 24/7 services and if there are immediate images that we have to do. Its very easy for us to work without going to our office. It's a great news for us PS lover...

No workplace in their right mind would allow employees access to an online photoshop. I know that I would block that website in my firewall rules. :D

Bad thing, very, very, bad thing.
How about being held hostage to "upgrades" that break features?
Or the subscription model where you pay an annual fee to use the program?
Maybe smaller monthly fees but a larger total?

There are lots of ways that software companies can use this to their benefit.
Not many of them are to our benefit.

But as a market share device to make photo website add-ons (like Flickr having a PS button maybe?) and push people towards your desktop application - a good idea.
