Question Help with 1st Communion pics.....

These were just grabshots in the car prior to leaving for the Church. My godchild looks so beautiful that I wish they weren't shot in the car. Any way to improve the lighting - and/or take the "inside the car" look out of them?

    Thanks......Liz

Hi Liz, I'm sorry that I can't help with the lighting issue, but I wanted to comment on what a beautiful young lady your goddaughter is! I also tried to blur out the background in PS, but I'm a novice at this, so others may be able to help better. Congratulations on her special day!

Beautiful girl and some great shots, well done!

I tried to see what I could do with the 1st shot.

    - removed color casts on dress (that was the first thing that distracted me)
    It also "softens" the highlights
    - more detail in the eyes
    - slightly sharpened image
    - removed distracting parts in image

    Talking Much better........

This looks much better. Thanks for taking the time and for your efforts.

Now, the challenge - how do I make these changes on my copy - in the pc & the CF card so I can have it printed?

In other words, I don't know how to get detail in the eyes, remove color casts and especially remove distractions.

    Thanks again.

    Thanks.......

    This looks better than mine.....

I'm used to very little post processing - this is the first image I did that I'd really like to improve it. I really appreciate your effort and taking the time to help.

Liz, I think you just have to right-click on the image and "save as" to your computer.

To remove greenish/blue color cast in PS:

    - copy background layer
    - create a mask for this new layer
    - areas that don't need correction are painted black
    - areas that need correction stay white (make a rough selection, you might want to exclude iris of the eyes)
    - slightly blur mask
    - add a hue-saturation adj. layer
    - group this layer
    - edit: cyans
    - select with left eye dropper in H&S the blue cast
    - select with the middle eye dropper (+) in H&S the blue/greenish cast.
    - move the saturation slider to the the left, value between -100 & -90

    Your wlecome

You can also do this with the 2nd image (nice job btw Kristin)

    I took Kristin's image and

    - removed color cast
    - desaturated face
    - more details in her eyes, also some slight dodge on the whites
    - brightened (only) her face slightly, with new highlight & shadow filter in CS
    - sharpened face
    - removed yellow in background (not needed, but I thought it looked better)

Work as much as possible with masks. Still room for improvement or preferences, but at least you get an idea what to look for.

    what a beauty

I would have NEVER guessed the first was taken in a car...she's obviously comfortable in front of the camera...

maybe if you exchanged emails you could send wings the full res version and have him send it back or right click and copy .

These are wonderful Liz---you need to shoot more people!

I'm sorry I missed you in NY

    Talking Thanks Nat.........

Yes, I'm really sorry I missed you too! Maybe Boston? Or whatever?

Thanks for the nice comments. Yes, my godchild is beautiful - and she ALWAYS takes a good picture. I've done some others of her when she isn't even trying to look nice.....and they are great. Very photogenic.

I right clicked & saved the image, printed it on cheap copy paper - and it's awesome. So I'm going to try printing on photo paper and giving it to the family.

Thanks again for your post. I'm glad you're back......I missed you!

I haven't been around as much except for a few minutes here and there due to the fact that my (fill in) secretary is missing LOTS of work........

Beautiful girl, and lovely pictures. I would've never guessed they were from inside a car, either. The others did a nice job with the background, so I thought I'd mess around with the lighting a bit. Tell me what you think:
