    Re: Blown High Light

I think one could criticize it, but it is pretty powerful the way it is. The schematic nature of the simple composition gives it a lot of power. Seems a bit ominous to me, but that is very probably just me.

Well the center of interest is pretty much right in the middle, but it has to be to capture the image. You really can't cut much of this. You might push it as hard as you can and cut everything off the top and the right. Won't change the composition all that much though. And it is good the way it is.

I shot it another way as well because I thought the same thing -- too centered. But, as you, I also thought it perhaps powerful enough to work in spite of the centered comp. Thanks for your time!

I would not change it. It is great. But I am sure someone will tell us both what is wrong shortly.

Um....Paula......this is still centered. Eeek, I shot this while trying to get the "light" in the 2/3 spot and thinking I was successful, but when I posted it, I realized this IS centered, too.

Nope the cropped version is way better in my opinion. Of course there seems to be some leeway to explore, but I think what you picked is pretty good.

    Re: Blown High Light

Hey Paula, I like this subject. The warm glow of the light against the frosty glass and the icicles hanging off makes this very appealing. I agree its centered but thats not really an issue with me. The problem I have with it is it feels cramped. . .too tightly framed. Actually, it could use just some more space at the bottom and some on the left so the post is not cramming against the edge. I understand why you cropped tightly, as the subject is a pleasure to view up close. A little breathing room would go a long way.
Nice find and pretty good photo overall. Not sure about your title, there are no highlights blown here.

    Re: Blown High Light

Agree about the crop...bit tight, I will give it more space to the right to make more of longer frame horizontally, add a whisker more to the bottom also, not much just give more slack to the ice. The DOF works very well as the exposure also.

    Re: Blown High Light

Thanks, guys. The blown high light is because the light is on a "high" pole and the icicles are blown a bit sideways. hehehe.

I do have a tendency to crop rather tightly. I like that full frame in your face thing, I guess.

Agree that the crop is too tight, particularly at bottom. I love the mood.
