    Welcome to Hollywood...

Well, after a ten day vacation in Southren California, picked up some interesting shots. Regardless to say, a small town, Canadian boy was pretty photo happy in the big city. Here were some of my favourites of the first batch (approx. 300) I have about another 200 to sift through, so I'll post any good ones if I find them. For clarity, my purpose for the pictures isn't to offend anyone, rather show what I saw. It's quite a shocker, for me atleast, to see these type of things. I added a black and white for effect. This is my first time at a 'portrait' type shot, I've never really shot people, especially when they don't know I'm shooting at them. It's odd, and I almost feel like I'm violating people as I did this.

    What do you guys think!?

    Brie,

The USA is a scary place for me! *shudders* I don't mind the homeless people, I usually even try to give them some sort of moeny if I have it on me, but some people just cross the line from crazy/weird. There is some crazy people out there, and I just was lucky enough to photograph one.

    Hi Jared,

Nice capture. I like the contrast of the subject and that famous tap dance guy in the photo (can't remember his name). Looks wet! California has been steeling our rain again. Also, I prefer the color version as it help tells the story of inner-city color. Do you have a version with the "Lords" feet?

    Tim,
Thanks for the comments. Never even noticed that tap dancing guy, nice eye. Yeah, in Hollywood it was wet the one day, off and on rain, but still no fun. Unfortunately, no photos with his feet. I took this from across the street and it was hard to avoid the cars in there. Thanks for the comments,

    Jared

    Too Busy...

It is a bit busy Jared..
There is too much information in the background to focus on the guy and his sign.
When I look at the photograph my eye has a hard time focusing on one element.
Perhaps a better option for you, would have been to get closer to him so that the photograph would be nice and tight on him.

    Brian,

Thanks for the words and I understand what your saying about the busy aspect of the picture. Think a crop would help it?

    Thanks,

    Hi Jared,
This is a nice snap. It captures the culture of the place. I agree the shot is bit busy. I think the shot would be not intersting if guy is facing the camera.
    All the best.

    Hi Jared,

I sure wish I had known you were coming to California as we could have met up. I live ONLY 15-20 minutes away from Hollywood!!!!!!

I think your photo captures Hollywood just the way it is--busy!

I think this fella that I shot on Hollywood Blvd. last year should have a few words with your fella and teach him a few things!

    Yoyo,

Thanks for the words, I agree about the voyeuristic view of this shot. With him looking at the camera, I would've not enjoyed it at all.

    Ray,

Nice shot of yours. Sorry I didn't broadcast my trip, time was tight and we only ended up being in Hollywood for 4 hours. Thanks again,

    Jared

    Re: Welcome to Hollywood...

Nice shot. I think the colors make it work. Lady in red w/camera and shopping bag in front of you are here sign makes me think "disneyland". Far left guy in shades checking out Bell's bottom, flash of orange over main subjects left shoulder, and main subject being ignored reminds me of the Soddam and Gamorra story. All of the people squeezed into the shot(squeezed is emphasized by people between sign right frame), seemingly oblivious to oneanother gives a view of life in the big city.
Since you can't see the Lords feet I think cropping some of the bottom off would help.
    Mark.

    Mark,

Great post. Thanks for pointing out all those tiny things I seemed to pass when I initially looked at the shot. Thanks for the tips,

    Jared

    Re: Welcome to Hollywood...

I really like the colour shot Jared. I think its very powerful.
A guy that most likely don't own much or have any power holding a sign "I am the lord". I've seen alot of signs here in Toronto. But that one is pretty clever. I aslo don't think it's too busy, it's an urban city shot after all, I expect to see many things going on.

    LeeIS,

Thanks for the words. I'm sure any big city attracts such people and sights as these. Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it,
