    Re: Weird Science

Very Interesting shot GB something I dont see every day.
I like the general idea and the overall lighting. The bouncy color lights really add up an interesting mood.
On the other hand I`m uncertain about the object to the right I would like to crop it... though I dont know how it fits in you original idea about the shot. Also I would personally remove the motion blur of the gal over her right shoulder an near the santa`s hat.

    Re: Weird Science

I like this, the expression on her face is cool. It seems like you used a rear curtain with a slightly long exposure, hand held. I actually like the slight trail it produces, is this a colleague of yours doing something to entertain your main subjects? You just playing around with a model? Your inclusion of the backdrop stand (I think, is that what it is?) seems to indicate that. The sort of dim graduated light from the right looks cool, but I would like to see her a bit brighter in contrast, perhaps a curves adjustment? Layered masking? Hmm...

The soft shadow is very cool, even at the strongest shadow point on her leg upper thigh. I also suppose the lights were facing somewhere else as such. What is she looking at? Or, just being coy and looking away?

Yes I really like this as well. As a portrait I *think* it wants more light on the face, but the lighting is quite pleasing even as it is. Is this model someone you know?

    Re: Weird Science

Judging from the 1/4 second exposure, I think I know what you were doing here, as I've done it myself with varying success on group shoots

I really like this one GB but have to agree with BlueRob about the color cast ghosting at the shoulder and hat, that should go. I have been able to remove it in the past by desaturating the area, but it shouldn't be hard to clone either. The movement of the lights combined with the frozen pose looks great!

PS: For those wondering about "the thing" on the right, it's a light boom - a really expensive one.

I really like this GB, very interesting concept. I also like the object on the right as it sorta anchors this shot in a weird way for me. I wish her face was a bit sharper, I don't know exactly what it's called but having the flash fire at the end of the long exposure would've rendered her totallly sharp. love the light play around her.

    Re: Weird Science

Wow, better response than I expected... goes to show that posting an oddball image doesn't produce a neutral response.

I shot this at a Christmas party/open house for a new studio here. Wasn't a true shoot, but the invited models showed up mostly ready to pose. Most of these were 'grab' shots. The idea was mine -- Xmas lights wrapped 'round a model, w/ and w/o spinning... mostly a failure due to technical issues like how to properly expose the model AND only show the lights and not their cord. See the original image: I tried a little selective darkening and finally realized that it would work best as an 'artsy' shot. I was hoping that the light boom Jet mentioned would look like a laboratory machine.

That gives me an idea for the future photoshoot theme - Weird Science, with all sorts of odd contraptions and machinery?

Rob, Jet, roger on the ghosting. Sounds like a bit of work to make it convincing, but it's wintertime. However, Anbesol doesn't agree with you

Anbesol, just playinn around. I just met this model, definitely has a lot of potential, and daring (I hear the shoot got a little out of control after I left .. I guess all those drinks started working their magic. But that's another story......). She really wasn't looking at anything by the way, just being a model. I'll post more of her.

Daq, no one I knew but I think I will hire her if I do that Weird Science shoot. I just need a lab. Hmm.. I know some researchers over at the local university.. maybe lab mice dancing on her back? No... doubt she'd go for that. anyway.

    Thanks too, Alik and Jet.

lol, I may be outnumbered, but my idea (leaving it as is) is the easiest. Besides, its blur is the same direction as the lights, if you clone out her ghosting, why not the lights then too?

    Re: Weird Science

Yeah, I think the ghosting SHOULD go, but I don't know if it is a major flaw. I guess it depends on who is paying for it. I suspect if someone were buying the shoot they would prefer not to have it. But it does not bother me.

    Re: Weird Science

Looking at the original shot I would try a crop that excluded the side artifacts and keep all the xmass lights...looks cool to see the path of lights running from the point of view towards the model and the around her IMO.

    Re: Weird Science

Odd name but yes. Some of these are good... I am thinking of a shoot with models, like the images here (from the sites)

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2183/...faec6cb5_o.jpg

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2376/...195d6ac7_o.jpg

    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mgyYTW2w19...-abneypark.jpg

Perhaps with laboratory cloaks, test tubes, microscopes, lab mice, Frankenstein like electric generators, etc. I need to start assembling the props now, plus the ideas of how to mix models into such scenes.

Get a Jacob's Ladder as well as a Tesla Coil in the background - running of course.
