    Urban Dwellings 3

This is a scene that occured at the last minute on one of my shoots. I guess the cat was curious as to my presence outside and decided to have a look/sunbath.
This window was a second floor and the picture was shot from the street with approx 150mm.
Do you feel it came across effective?
    Thanks

The textures in the window frame are pretty awesome, and I like all the rectangles between the panes, frame and bricks. The cat's position is pretty perfect, too, imo...

Gary, the picture looks pixelated to me. Beside that purely technical consideration, I like it quite a lot. The tones are especially remarkable and I like the window by itself.

The broken pane, the texture of the peeling paint, the cat, the curtains, all of it comes together beautifully. Very well seen. I really like how the shadows are creeping up to the window but didn't get in the way of the main comp.

wow! great shot and good eye! I love the patterns and textures! And the cat, well the cat just makes the picture. With out the cat it would be a creepy looking window... with the cat its showing life in a window that seems dead. And the reflections of the tree branches make the picture that much more erie.

    I love it

Gary, everyone else summed it up pretty well. This may sound crazy, but the cat being in the lower left window balances it much better I think, than if it had been in the lower right window. Great shot for "a last minute". Well done.

I love it Gary and it looks as if it was taken straight on. There's the horizontal shadow from the window frame wade wiggly by the folds in the curtain which is great. Neither of the four window panes have the same detail and the peeling painwork is really great. The cat's presence is wonderful.
I can imagine an old woman the other side of the curtains sitting in front of the fire doing her knitting.

    Re: Urban Dwellings 3

    Thanks for the comments
Emily. . .I had been taking pics of this house and the cat was not there. I headed back to the car and took one last turn around to look at the house and there the cat was in the window. I went to get the telephoto lens while muttering to myself. " please stay there, don't move"

Seb . . .I'm glad you mention the tones. I was torn between a straight b&w, which looked good and this. I needed to go with this tone as the picture will work in a series of shots about urban dwellings and they will carry this old, sepia-type tone. As for the pixelation, I see what your seeing as well. The file itself is not pixelating, though. i was studying this for a while and I notice that the textures of the shingles as they get close to the window pane, especially on the right frame side, begin to take on a water-damaged crinkly surface which, at least on my screen , resembles a pixelation or artifacts.

D . . i was not certain if the shadows bothered me at the bottom and the top. I thought they might be more distracting than positively effective. Glad you see it that way.

Jessica. . . Yes, the window itself is a creepy looking subject, and I would have shot it by had I been able to really notice it from where I was standing. It was after the cat went to the window and I pulled out the tele and focused on the window did i see how very interesting it was in itself. Thanks for the comments

John. . . i agree with you on that. i feel the balance worked well where the cat is as opposed to maybe sitting on the other side. I think it is because the other side is darker and the cat being in the lighter side helps to give a balanced feel. That was certainly deliberate on the cats part as it knows where the warm spot of the window is. thanks for looking

Tom . . .thanks for the comments. What i also noticed is that the window on the top right is broken. That day was extremely cold, and I would guess the long thick curtains help keep the cold from the window out, although probably not too much

The tonal ranges here are very pleasing... I think I would not like it as much in b/w. The textures of the bricks and paneling really pop here.
The only thing that is brothering me is the shadow along the top.
    Great shot.

    Gary,

I may be reapeating others comments - I haven't read them yet so

This is outstanding - The composition is awsome - especially your friend the cat, how did you get him to stay there; Nails or superglue? LOL

The tones in this picture really make it stand out and the shadow of the tree climbing up the curtains getting darker as they reach the reflection in the glass is an incredible capture.

The texture of the cat's fur + whiskers, bricks, window, and paint is incredible along with the broken glass really adds up to the squalour of this building and its residents.

    Super

Nice and rustic. Reminds me of farms in Poland, cat and everything.

    Re: Urban Dwellings 3

Nice shot, but I dont know what to make of it. Sort of like a frame within a frame. The cat is a great touch. The only thing that I think I dont like is the brightness of the exposure (I wish it was more muted, more moody..) and the angle you shot it at - seems that you were just a slight bit below the center height of the window. I think it would have been better if you were exactly at the center. But this is a nitpick.

    Re: Urban Dwellings 3

I like this. I find it pleasing and strange at the same time, finding myself wondering who lives here. It is kind of like some older horror films, with the broken pane, and the cat in the decayed building. Hope that made sense, as I have seen things in films this reminds me of. at any rate, I like it.
