    Moody shot of the Woods

I just got a roll of Ektachrome VS back and it came out a little odd. I realized after I shot most of it that I had set the exposure compensation to - 1/3. But I also made the mistake of shooting many of the shots with a polarizer, and in my experience, you definitely do not want to do that with this film or even Velvia since they're already balanced to produce deeply saturated blue skies, and adding a polarizing effect will over do it (like this). It is also possible that this roll got a little too warm.

Anyway -- what do you think? I didn't try to correct it.. Maybe it is Ok as is?

    GB,

Thanks for the explanation regarding the film. I try not to read the photographer's or other comments until after I view the image. I appreciate the explantion. Having said that, I really love the deep saturation. I usually don't like such extremes but this wild range to indigo blue is exciting and compliments the subject well. Usually straight nature scenes don't handle deep saturation such as this but for some reason, I like the feel. Perhaps it is the scene. Regarding the scene itself, I recently saw portions of the back country that are recovering from the fire, too. I am taken by the hearty, strength of nature and how incredibly beautiful the grasslands are against the horror of the damage. Nice job depicting that scene.

    CF

P.S. Given the title I was anticipating a photo of James Moody who is a San Diego resident.

It is moody though I can't put my finger on the mood. I guess it would depend on the state of mind I'm in at the time and will probably vary from viewer to viewer.
I wasn't sure about the changing tones of the sky but after a bit of study, I think it works.
I like it! Print it big on metallic paper.

Re: Moody shot of the Woods

Thanks guys. You didn't mention the CW tilt it has, or that I think it has - do you see it, and do you think it's an issue?

CF - I think I have heart of James Moody, although I am not sure where; an article, an art show, signature on a photo, ? I agree about the saturation - I immediately saw that it created a mood that normal properly exposed photograph would not. Perhaps this brings up the question as to whether it is better to aim for shots like this instead of run of the mill shots that we see every day?

And yes, this is right over there at Cuyamaca Peak. I'm getting ready to hike Kilimanjaro and was trying to get into hill shape. It is amazing how after 4 years or so that you would not even be able to tell there was a massive fire if it wasn't for the big scorched trees. The brush et al is completely back!

Frog - I also can't express the mood. Perhaps a medieval mood, like sword and sorcery movie or dream? Or one where you feel like you just got over 4 days of the flu and are just getting back to normal Yeah, this one might be good on metallic paper, though didn't Kodak discontinue that paper? This is what a photographer told me at a recent art show here (he says has bought a bunch of it before it died).

I might do a series with this effect. Perhaps a few city scenes too?

The only tilt I see is the very tallest tree which has a lean and then bend CW. Other than that, I do not see a tilt; the horizon is level. As for your question, there is no answer. I think it speaks to the creativity of the photographer and in the end does it please you?

Have a great trip. Sounds like a real adventure.

I do notice the tilt in the horizon, but it doesn't bother me too much. Whilst moody, I do like what you have. I'm not one for heavily saturated skies and so forth, but this, I like

I do think the horizon is slightly tilted but I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it.
I don't know what CW is but as soon as you or someone tells me I'll say, "OH, yeah".
Mpix has metallic paper. Don't know if it works for film.

I fixed the horizon. It looks correct now, but I wonder if the slight tilt actually made it more interesting (a conversation piece).

Clockwise and CCW is counter clockwise.

Yeah you are right, and I had forgotten. They give you a choice of metallic paper on the pix they sell of marathoners. I guess that photographer was saying that they discontinued it for film (he is a holdout).

Thks Danic and CF. Yeah I guess I'm sort of happy the direction this one is going in, sort of Gothic or something, though I am not sure. Definitely weird

It works for me, very nice, though "Moody" maybe not, "Another Time and Place" possibly, looks like the area was ravaged by fire and after some time undergrowth beginning to sprout up again. Reminiscent of fire aftermaths I've seen in Australia. S

/I really like the contrast of the deep rich colour of the sky at the top and the stark lack of colour in the landscape where they meet. Really nice shot GB

Re: Moody shot of the Woods

Thanks Greg and Yoyo. It's a different type of shot than I usually take (actually it isn't, just a different exposure). Glad to hear that you think it works.

Shootme, you are exactly right in that this area was burned. About 4 or 5 years ago it got completely fried.. The firefighters actually had to let most of it burn and concentrate their defenses on a nearby historic town named Julian (which was saved). It was really sad because the place was so beautiful beforehand. They estimated 50 - 75 years before it returned to what it was. The good news is that it's already looking a lot better than anyone dreamed it would - just the large trees are still scorched or dead, and as you see here they seem to blend in Ok or create more interesting contrast. I guess it created a few artistic possibilities that weren't possible before (.. I'm trying to find the silver lining).

Jaedon, thanks too. I see what you mean about the starkness of the land contrasting with the richness of the sky. Kind of different seeing two opposites like that right next to each other.

Here is a slight rotated version to correct that slight tilt. I didn't totally level the background figuring it was more important to make the center tree plum...

I prefer the original image, it appears to be more dynamic, AFAIC. I think the dark sky works great, especially with a fitting title like "revivification" or similar. Great picture overall.

I LOVE the first image. That to me is a stand alone photograph, 10 different people will see 10 different things. Exactly what I love and yet cant seem to do!

Re: Moody shot of the Woods

I like it greg although it probably can be tilted some more left using the background trees as verticles and that bit of horizon through trees. The deep blue gives it that space atmosphere look where a picture from orbit can give you both dimensions..maybe pop a few twinklies up high?
Please ask to edit photos and I'll do the same!
    Thx, Rod

Re: Moody shot of the Woods

Class A - funny, when looking at the two I can barely tell any difference. I sort of expected someone else to state that, but it's interesting how discriminating everyone here is (and that's a good thing). I like your suggested title, btw.

Lori - thanks, as you may have read this exposure was a mistake. I did correct it in PP as an expt but it looked too 'normal', so I left it as the film depicted it. The west has a lot of burned areas btw.

    Thanks JT

Rod, I tried that but then it made the center (subject) tree lean left. So I decided to set the tone with the center tree. Add a few stars up top? That would be funny looking.. Maybe I'll try it and see what it looks like.
