Umbrella Portraits

Some portraits of a friend - I've had this Idea in my head for a while to include umbrella in the shot.

I think these are inspired and inspiring. Love the way she looks like she's floating up in the 2nd shot.

My only nit is that the focus seems a bit soft on your model's face in the first shot. Maybe it's just my ailing eyes.

Very interesting and unusual idea. Like Cathathome, I love the second shot with its illusion that the umbrella has lifted her off the ground! I do think I'd eliminate the very small out of focus strip at the bottom though.

Great shots, but the only thing I would have to say is that, at least in the first, but less so in the second, the face is a little too bright from the flash. It doesn't look really bad or anything, but at least personally, I try to keep any overexposure to a minimum. Anyway, those are just my thoughts. Keep up the good work.

I'm here at my Friend's computer and I se what you saying about the over exposure, but on my laptop it dosent seem so, I'll fix it when I get home though! and drey - you gotta love the strobist movement!

Pretty neat shots alright. Good creativity. They do seem a tad manipulated to me, seeing a slight halo around her on the bottom shot and maybe on the top image also (perhaps you did this to selectively blur the background?). The top one is good but the intense light on the one side of her face sort of knocks it down a notch. The bottom shot's still the best. This pose etc might look incredible in a studio,

I think that she over exposed, but I absolutely love the concept looks like something you'd see in a photography magazine promoting a new product. I think that with everyone's input on this when you go to recreate this image you'll nail it.

Is this the same umbrella you used in the portraits you did of the
same subject and posted in the portraits thread?

Do you like the soft lighting you get from your umbrella better than
using a flash diffuser?
Forgive if that's a stupid question, I dont understand the difference
between umbrella, and diffused light from a flash.

I guess what I'm asking is, under what circumstance would you use
umbrella and not a diffused flash.

These are fun!! I agree about her face being too bright... and I would have LOVED to see a bright red umbrella, or any color other than white - for a better contrast with the sky...
