Topless

Great one of the random night shots that I took the other night.
They are redoing the intersection. sorry about the title.
For as I'm still learning Digital please pick apart.
I need help. also next month I will be taking a class to improve my skills.

Main thing I see right off the bat is that the only thing in focus is the traffic cone in front of the grader. The composition is good but you always need to be aware of things like the backhoe that's entering from the right as you snapped the shutter. Exposure is also tricky in this situation, and it seems you 're a tad overexposed. It's a good starting point, and the subject is interesting, so please don't take my comments as overly critical. Just one relative newbie trying to help another. One advantage of digital over film is that as long as you have a little time to pull over and spend with the subject, it doesn't cost you anything to take a bunch of shots using different settings until you become comfortable and familiar with what everything does. In the thread I started yesterday (B & W abstract) I spent more than half an hour taking 47 shots from different angles, distances and priority modes. I ended up w/ 3 "keepers", 3 "marginal", and 41 that had problems of one sort or another. I didn't delete the 41, but instead studied them to find where the mistakes were and make mental notes on how to correct them next time I head out.

that is funny, I remember somewhere someone post a similar topic but anyway there is alot of subject out there for you to shoot and this is a good example how tricky about how difficult focusing at night

The shot is OK from an interest and action perspective, but is probably too soft, cluttered, and has too many things in the way to be a true keeper. now if the subject was a bank robber having a shoot out with the police or something nuts like that, the obstructions and softness would be acceptable given the situation. Here, the reward isn't great enough to overcome the issues. The light intensity differences are also too extreme here.

To fix this, I would first sharpen it as much as you get away with without it being too obvious. I might decrease the contrast a bit.
