    Yuma Dunes

A shot of the Yuma sand dunes on the Ca/Az border. If it looks familiar, it's were they shot part of one of the Star Wars movies.

Not as sharp as it could be, even after PP. I think it was very late in the day and that the lighting was unusual. Not sure if I like the colors myself - perhaps a little too earthy?

Very good, GB. The colors work for me, as well as the composition. The shadow and the lighted areas of sand make a somewhat abstract design enhanced by the small area of blue sky.It is a simple, beautiful, elegant landscape. Very nice

I like it as well. It seems very simple (meant in a good way).

    Re: Yuma Dunes

Lovely colour curves and forms. The large area in shadow is a little weird to me; almost as if not a shadow caused by the rolling dunes but by some building, and it unfortunately almost blackens out a lovely area of soft hollows. But that's nature!.
    Really nice.

    Re: Yuma Dunes

    Thanks for your observations.

Gary and KC, I see what you mean about abstract and simple. I sort of feel that it's a human body somehow... I think that is the nature of abstracts. The color just seems strange. But those can always be adjusted.

Overbeyond I totally agree about the shadow's origin. Somehow, for some reason, it seems that there has to be something on the right that is causing it........ But there isn't, other than another sand dune (I remember that much). I wonder what it would have been like 15 min earlier w/o the shadow -- no way to tell without going back.

Gosh GB, I think you're being a bit hard on yourself. This is a great photo. Soft, great lines, the shadow is perfect and yes, it is earthy but....it is earth.

    I like it. Nice job!

I too like it. You are concerned about softness but I'd say that it's a good thing here. It makes the scene more abstract than it would have been if there were a lot of textures.

I like the flow of light and lines.

This is excellent, I think the shadows and specifically the colours in the shadows make this photo and how they are graduated from the right bottom.

    Lovely

That is a really nice composition as it is... great colors and I like how the dunes are through the picture with the shadows. I could see doing some fun things in photoshop with the colors.

    Re: Yuma Dunes

    Thks for the additional comments.

Opus, that is a very nice shot, how did you get it? Looks like they tilted the plane to the side so you could aim the camera straight down. I would up the contrast on it a little in PS.

CF, Greg - I never thought it was a bad shot, just strangely colored... Sand is usually tan and somehow it shifted to brown (!?) The Dirt Sands of Yuma. I need to camp out there some time and see what it's like at sunrise.

Thks Seb and Roger. I also think the shadows are better than them not being there.

4XTaco, if you'd like to take a shot at some expts with it than by all means do so. It's up for grabs! Try posting it here afterwards so that we can see what happened.
