    Takin' One For The Team

Ok, Ok...there isn't enough of the umpire and the catcher, but from the angle I took it, they weren't in the shot all the way. I focused on the hitter as he was trying to avoid being hit.

    OK John,
I've been thinking about this one. I think it definitely depends on its title to communicate the action. The fact that he has turned all the way around to face you looks less like he's jumping out of the way of the ball and more like he's about to attack the catcher with the bat.

I'm kidding, I'm kidding. I think this is a good catch although I don't know much about sports photography so take it for what it's worth. I like the expression on his face and don't particularly have a problem with the location of the umpire and catcher in the frame. I do know enough about baseball to expect them to be there. So an outstretched arm and a black back are logical in my mind. I'm impressed that you got the ball in the frame in context with the player at all and like it's position in the frame as the object of dynamism. (Gosh, did that just come from me?)

    How's that?

See, wrong forum....lol (couldn't resist that one John)

I think a different angle would have been better, and the ball closer to the batter. I have managed to get a couple shots of batters getting hit, but always at the wrong angle. It's tough to get and get it where it really works and makes sense to all viewers. You know what happened, but just a quick look by someone who didn't see it happen and they may think something totaly different about what was going on.

Valid point, JS. This just happened to take place right in front of me. Ideally I'd have been somewhere on the 3rd base side, as he's a lefty. I do have one taken from the first base side with a righty up and the ball grazing his jersey. I'll post that some other time. Thanks for the comment.

    Regards,
Actually CL, I was debating about whether or not to crop out the catcher and umpire, as I thought they might distract. Thanks for the comments.
