I can't really tell if it's a result of your JPEG settings or a scan maybe, but I suspect the quality of the shot you've posted here, doesn't match the quality of [the original image]? I can see all kinds of artifacts that aren't normally caused by cameras / bad exposures... any chance you can post a higher quality JPEG?

From what I can tell, seems like it might be a pretty good moment you've captured.

I'm not real good with the scanner yet(original is a 35mm slide with pretty good quality). I'll play around and see if I can't get a better image. I couldn't figure out how to preview the image before I posted, Is that possilbe?

OK, scanned using a different method. Any better?

Definitely better. You'll get the hang of the scanning thing in short order I'm sure.

Now onto the photo. While still not totally clear of scanner defect, I can see much better now the quality of your exposure and certain aspects of the composition. I still cannot tell if the woman's face is in focus, but I will assume for now that it is.

Generally, I like this photo a lot. I think that the pole hanging down by her head is distracting although I understand why you left it in. I think though that the shot is more about the drama of the moment than it is about her navigating the course poles. If you have the software I would digitally remove it. Also, I think perhaps a faster shutter speed might've made the shot even better. Completely freezing those water droplets flying everywhere would be a cool thing IMO.

The color is also good, with the yellow of the water craft complimenting the water (which it almost always will since blues and yellows are complimentary.

I like the photo too. It's an unusual sports photograph for this site (from what I've seen in my limited time here), and IMO that's a good thing as it will compliment the work of the others sports heads here. I would like to have seen more of the photo down and to the left, to compliment where her (his?) face is looking - almost as if we're also looking down and anticipating what is coming next along with the athlete. I realize from my limited attempts at action photography that this is especially difficult to do, but it would have made the photo more dramatic IMHO.

Thanks Brian. The scanning seem more daunting than the photography!
