wow! Love the first one, Everything comes together (lighting, contrast, framing) You hit the mark with that one! The second one is good, but the first one really grabs me !

B&W was a good choice for these. The cropping gives them a science-fiction feel. Very nice!

    Wow.

I was thinking that I should have posted a pattern shot to show that the pattern need not necessarily lined up grid fashion. This is a great illustration of that and beautiful and elegant as well. I like the light punching through the petals in the second shot especially. The dark areas of both shots really let them sing.
Does the first evoke flamingoes for anyone else?

How did you do the BW conversion?

    BW using channels

I picked up a simple easy to understand(illustrated) book to PS old from '95 but it had basics and it explained using the channels mixer to really punch up color to BW and I did what it said(I think) and then converted to grayscale and there it was...

it reminds me of the thing Luke skywalker gets thrown into in return of the jedi mor ethan flamingoes...but hey to each his own drug
    (kidding )(REALLY kidding)

Thanks...I keep thinking it's a bit stark but it still has some values of grey in there so who knows...for now I think I'm o.k. with it...

I like them. Something different from you typical flower macro. I especially like the second one. While I was studying the first one I was thinking it would look even cooler if you got in tighter on just one part of the mum so that it may not be readily recognisable. Lo and behold that's what I got on the second shot. It almost has that electron microscopic dust mite look to it. Not many would look at flowers and think B&W. That alone would set it part but nice work with the exposure, dof and composition.

Bw plants and flowers are one of my many fav things...hre's some I did a few months back with a point and shoot camera set on macro mode (it isn't true macro) more like a close up...

it just works better than too much color...the tulip was yellow and red

Nat these are really great. Both sets, the mums and these. I really dig them.
The b/w is so complimentary to each. I think more effective than color.
I'd love to see those on a wall.

    Natalie,
Good stuff. . . I really like the second shot from the first post. The lighting is dramatic. The curved petals look like little beings waiting there turn to join in the "huddle" in the center. Nice work.

Very Nice Nat! I have bought a couple of PS books but still don't seem to have the one that puts it all together for me. As a result most of my images have very little in the way of PS done to them. After seeing these and a few over on VF with the actions from Hodge I am convinced I need to learn more.

go to your local library or borders...Tim Daly is the name of the author...he's pretty easy to understand and shows you step by step...thanks...your images barely need PS...your exposures are usualyy pretty on and everything is sharp as a tack...

Thanks for the compliment, but you only see what I post there are plenty more that can use help. I have a Scott Kelby book that is pretty good and a Photoshop for Dummies but don't seem to be able to get the real basics the way I should. I'll check out Daly too.

Nat, I like the 1st one best b/c you tell for sure it is a flower - but not your average flower! The tones are really good and you have really great hightlights and shawdows! Very nice! You can almost see a set of 3 from this series in a frame hanging on someone's wall. I like it a lot.

thanks...flowers and plant's textures are too amazing and get ignored because color is sometimes all we tend to see

Regarding Photoshop books -- Lord have mercy! I've got a ton of them -- but, I keep going back to the Scott Kelby Photoshop for Digital Photographers book more than any of the rest of them.

Keep 'em coming Nat -- your imagination continues to be the coolest!

Thnaks Penny...I loved your series from your recent travels...my imagination may be "cool" but your pics of places are amazing...jealous jealous jealous
