Soft Ball Game
#2 is my daughter scoring a run, game ended in a tie. I had to change my ISO several times as the night wore on, to try and keep the motion blur down.I think I did ok. What do you guys think. This is straight off the camera, nothing but resizing done to it.

Good color and exposure. Ideally, you don't want #14 blocking the view of your daughter and the catcher, but sometimes things are out of your control.

Tyson,
I think you did well. No blur that I can see, caught the action, colors are rich. Nice going Dad.

Re: Soft Ball Game
since sports is basically everything I do...I'm going to be a bit rough with my critique.
First off, there's no ball. Most of the time, a shot with no ball is a shot that's not worth keeping. Unless there's an interesting expression, I usually just toss it. Second, nothings really sharp. Third, there's really no visible faces. It could really benefit from PP, and I don't get why people post photos with no PP, because almost every single photo could benefit from some type of processing done on it. It's like saying "here's my photo that could be much better and probably will but I'll show you the crappy version."
as far as #14, yes some things are out of your control, but for this one I think just moving or zooming in more could have improved this shot. Sometimes foreground elements work, but usually it's only if they are engaged somewhat to the subject of the photo. Try different angles, see what works best. Shoot through the fence wide open on your lens to blur the metal out.
It's not a great sports photo, no. But it's a good way to remember your daughter's run.
Sorry if it's harsh, but like I said, sports is my thing. And it is in the critique forum. And I'm hot, tired, and stressed with finals week.

Re: Soft Ball Game
I likre #1 the best. I think the composition is fine. The falling helment and bat on the ground helps with the shot. The colors, focus and DOF works too.
Thanks Brent for the lesson. I don't do sports much but I will certainly remember the tips for the future. We have a minor league BB team here in Rome and if I ever get the chance your tips will come in handy.
