Paul McCartney is, and always has been, a bit of a dwid, but he wrote a few good songs.

The mountains look strangely purple Doug.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

Hence the line "For purple mountain majesties, Above the fruited plain" in the opening stanza of the song - America the Beautiful

Nice shot Daq, the road really does a great job pulling you into this one.

Great scene, but the sign ruins it for me.

I guess that would be an easy crop.

I'd hate to see that much cropped off for the sign. I'd recommend pulling the thing out of the ground and doing a re-shoot.

Nice perspective and comp, but I think its a bit dark and murky. Would like to see some more light and details in the green areas. Still pretty nice.

Re: The Long and Winding Road

Wrt to the purpleness of the mountains. Here is a completely unprocessed photo of a location near there.

You can see that both the mountains and the skies are quite purple, and this is a daylight wb set in photoshop. I do wonder a bit about the color accuracy of the camera, because while the mountains ARE actually purple they seem maybe a bit much here.

No the original photo has a photomatix layer lightly blended at the top and heavily blended on the mountains in order to maximize the texture. Photomatix has a tendency to purpleize things, and it probably exacerbated the problem.

Don't crop - clone it out.

Yes, it would be an easy clone out.

More so than the sign clone the distant roof tops.

I like it. Can't comment on the color as I'm on my crappy lap top at the moment. I'm OK with the sign as it goes with the road, but I agree that at least a couple of the rooftops need to come out. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it.

Re: The Long and Winding Road

Wow, this one glows on my monitor. I don't know about those horizontal cuts in the road as they make it seem a little like this is film that was scratched, but the blue is mesmerizing and the wide, short format works well here. The color scheme on this one is very basic - blue, green, yellow - but it works out. The darkness on the right side creates some mystery.

Re: The Long and Winding Road

Thanks guys for the good feedback. I think this one is worth tweaking, so when I get the chance I will:

    1. Clone out the sign
    2. Clone out the roofs.
    3. Investigate the plausibility of cloning out the lines. Might be hard texturally.
    4. Bump up some of the foreground grass contrast.
    5. My own observation: Light paint some of the grass in the mid-ground to bring out some of the gaudy evynd earle essense of it.

By the way, here is the ride report if anyone wants to read it. It is mostly PG, but earlier in the thread has strong language.

Ok, various suggested tweaks and others. I left the lines in the road but cloned out the stupid cages farther up the road...

Re: The Long and Winding Road

Anyway guys, I like this one. It by no means does the scene a disservice, unless pornifying it is a disservice. It was gorgeous in real life, but here it is almost as if I am riding on mushrooms. You know. Portabella...
