    A little dark on the surfer but I think it works. The water colors is beautiful and a nice exposure level.

    I hope you dont mind, but I used your pic and tried some ways to lighten it up and I think the best way is to make a duplicate layer, make it the bottom layer, and simply erase the surfer on the top layer. Then just adjust the levels of the bottom layer until the surfer looks light enough to see more details, but doesnt look out of place.

    I like the silhouetted look. It makes me long to live on the coast again...sigh!

    I find default settings on the shadows/highlights in the adjust image menu in photo shop works a treat.

    Great capture! And what a great ride!

    As you know, the subject is dark. But, I think it can be rescued. Try the suggestions listed above. Curves may also help by selecting the subjec's part of the curve to push up.

    Im actually trying to learn to use curves myself and I was wondering if there's way you can sample the area of the scene you want to enhance with curves instead of guessing at which lightness value it's at.
