very very nice photo. i like it alot. do you know what species it is? that always seems to make a picture stronger. your focus and DOF amaze me, its perfect. and to be very nit picky- to make it a perfect photo i would try to eliminate the white background in the UL corner.
and to answer your question, i have seen the fuzz on a butterflys back (but not as nicely as you show here), having looked at them under miscroscopes, i can see all kinds of stuff from a clsoe of tof their mouth paarts to the scales on their wings. of course they lose alot of color being preserved in alcohol.
Thanks very much for the kind comments. I too would like to remove the UL corner but my PS skills being what they are...I haven't figured that out yet. As for the species, I am drawing a blank at the moment, my apologies. I will think of it and post again. Thanks again.
I knew as soon as I logged off it would come to me, the species is Painted Lady. They usually fly around the San Diego area in clouds early spring, but this year they continue to be seen this late in summer.

Yes, the Vannessidae family have much longer hair than that.
In my recent attempt at macro shots about the only thing in focus on the small tortoiseshell IS the hairs
