    Re: Shetland Shelter

It seems soft, even the building but I think that has to do with atmospheric conditions more than focus.
The building is fascinating but so is are the surroundings and I wish it were wider to show its setting within the wider environment.
Could you have done a higher angle? For some reason the roof and skyline coming so close just to the right of the crow bothers me.
I do think it is a fascinating shot of something few of us will ever see or experience and the above are nit piks.
    Keep Shooting!

The problem for me on this one is that the door leads almost immediately off the frame. I think the building would have been better if moved to the far left with as much space to the right of the door as possible. Would have given more to the background and the door wouldn't have appeared cramped into the frame.

I tend to agree with Ridgetop. I think putting the building in the left third of the shot would have worked better. But not knowing what if any distractions you were working around. Do you have multiple angles?

Thanks Frog, I must confess that this was taken prior to my joining PR and with a P&S, like to think that now I would look at this scene a little differently.
Ridgetop and Greg appreciate your thoughts, the door thing hadn't occurred to me but now is bit of an issue that I have to live with because there is a modern structure just to the right which made this crop necessary .

In spite of comp. which is understood, the image is kina dull because was shot in very cloudy conditions. Nevertheless things could have been fixed up to be more attractive, "who needs light when we have Photoshop?".

I kind of figured. Your comp skills are top notch.

    Hmm.

This one's very simple, almost too much so, but it does have a quality about it that draws me in. I think it's both the cleanness and the saturation. Not sure I like that gap on the left side, as it seems to invite the viewer to look over there at something; alas, there's nothing there. Nice clouds, wish they were a little closer to the top of the building. Maybe you could have crouched down lower and created that. I wonder who uses this place...

    Re: Shetland Shelter

Gerald thanks for your thoughts, the colour are deliberately low key as it is in keeping with how I remember Shetland. Apart from the odd occasion the weather always seemed to be overcast and grey. My grandparents emigrated from a place not far from where this was taken, to New Zealand in the 1920s and this was part of my journey back to my ancestral origins.
Mr McCary you are just too kind...
Thanks GB Shetland has no shortage of clouds, stone buildings, or landscapes very similar to this as although its 170km north of Scotland its been inhabited for a very long time.
Looking through the shots taken while in Shetland, made me realise what an opportunity I had missed, especially the stunning seascapes and wildlife available there, and this was a motivating factor for getting a DSLR and joining PR
