Second Post

Following luvraducan's lead - I figured I'd introduce myself with a few pics. This is, however, my second post, as "winter wonderland" caught my attention first.

Anyway, I've been fooling around with a Pentax K1000 for a few months here - experimenting mainly in black and white. My motivation to get out and shoot has been tempered by temperature here in Winnipeg - very cold this winter.

These two attached shots are from the fall - the fist is just a context shot showing the subject, the second is composed - to capture the contrast between the unmarred portion of the dish, the skeletal remains above, and the substructure in shadow underneath.

Please don't hold back in your comments - although new to amateur photography, I enjoy it very much, and I'm eager to learn and happy to have found this forum.

The first shot is obviously, as you say, just a context shot. There are a lot of things about it that make it unappealing.

The second shot however, is very interesting. You've very nicely filled the frame with a very interesting subject. The one thing I would suggest, is to recompose with slightly more of your subject in the frame. Your composition is very interesting, but without the first shot - I don't know what I'm looking at in the second. It would be nice if I could identify the subject of the second without the first - not the whole thing mind you - you've done well to be selective, but just a little bit more.

You have a very interesting idea here. The stark form of the dish with its skeletal remains, from an interesting angle. I know I am just being contrary, but I would prefer it if I could not tell what I am looking at, or only have a vague idea at best. This would emphasize form and shape, not the actual function and use of the object. See if you can improve on this idea, as I would like to see some more of your work. Keep up the good work!

That second shot is terrific. Just the outlines of the three sections of the frame make an interesting composition and the contrast between the straight lines in the frame and the smooth curves of the dish is very nice. Good work.
