    The Seashore 2

Another from the session. I was trying to take advantage of the unusually high surf we were having from the recent hurricane that hit the south a few days ago.

    Re: The Seashore 2

    Hi Gary,

What I like about this shot is how crisp the gull is, and that she is keeping an eye out for that storm surf. I'm sure there is a rogue wave that comes in from time to time.

I think scale hurts this image some in that one cannot tell the wave size by looking at the bird (they look "small", but I know they are not). Backing up and going telephoto would help at the cost of your point of view.

The other thing that I see is "grain" in the clouds. Was this intentional? To me, it looks like an unintended result of PP step. I know this is a preference thing (I got a lecture on it.). I just point it out if it was unintentional. So, disregard if this was your desired result.

    Cheers,
    Tim

Remind me of your dafodil shot for some strange reason Gary. Probably its the survival against the odds thingy. The Great wave sort of provides the moment of apprehension for our little friend.

Gary, I think that I too prefer the first of the series over this one. Brian make a valid point about the scale and the waves appearing smaller than they were. On the other hand, I don't see any more grain in this one than in the other. They are both equally grainy and that kind of grain doesn't annoy me at all given the rather monochomatic nature of these picture.

That is still a good one and I prefer the tone of the sand as it is here.

    Re: The Seashore 2

Tim. . .thanks for your in-depth analysis of this, it helps. The focus was on the gull. The difficulty here for me was that I wanted to catch one of the big breakers as in the other shot but wanted the bird looking towards the sea, as it is in the image. The problem was that the bird was forever looking back the other way and i waited until my bent knees were aching. When she finally turned towrds the sea I snapped hoping for a somewhat dramatic wave. however, it was not as great as the other image breaker. As for the grain, these pics have some grain, but not as much as it seems here. I believe this is compression noise that is exagerating the grain. Because my internet connection is very poor, I compress my files immensly. This is a 48kb file, down from about 8mb. The full size scan is about 128mb, but i would not want to compress that down to 48kb.
There is grain, which I'm ok with, but it's not quite as enhanced as it seems here.

Tom. . .interesting comparison to my flower survival shot. yes, the apprehension exists here as in the flower shot. Glad to know your take on this.

Seb . . .I'm feeling stronger about the first one as well, but I think the second shot offers a different perspective of the similiar scene and so i will most likely include it. thanks as always.
