    An evening at "the mall"

I took these on a recent trip to the east coast. We spent all of an hour in DC, so we went to "The Mall" to maximize our monument viewing. We'd been there a year earlier, but they'd drained the reflecting pool for construction of the WWII monument. Construction is done, the monument is open, and the pool is full. No tripod, so I had alot of blurry pictures as light was fading. I think I managed to salvage a couple, but I'm no expert. Lemme know what y'all think...

    Thanks,
    Fred

Nice moods in these shots, Fred, good compositions as well. I'd consider warming everything but the sky in the fountain shot.

I like both shots. What Chunk has done with the first shot is nice and as he said, both could be a little warmer - but that may be viewer preference. In the first one, I think the man in the lower right adds much to the scene.

In the second, maybe moving a little to the left to show more of the Capitol building. But that may not have been possible. Also, I am seeing a little tilt that might be corrected.

It appears that both images are compressed - which helps in their composition. Were they taken with a zoom lens?

Tuna - both were taken with a 75-300 zoom. Unfortunately with the second shot, I had to set the camera on the steps in front of the Lincoln Memorial. I set it on the far left to get as much of the Capitol as possible, but without a tripod and with it being as dark as it was, this was as far left as I could go and get a non-blurred image. There also may have been something under the camera (a small pebble or imperfection in the steps) that caused the slant, I'm not sure.

I really like the warming done on the first image, although the blueness of the original still kinda holds me. I'm considering whether or not to clone out the small sign next to the man as it seems a little distracting to me, but haven't made up my mind yet.

in my opinion, i think cloning out the sign would be a good idea, as I couldn't tell *what* it was...until you disclosed... I like the warmer version as well, takes the blue out of the little corner guys legs and arms...

good job, considering your story! oh, and I think the sharpness is fine in both.

Like 'em, but both seem tilted to the right a touch. The first is my favorite. On the second, I'd try to avoid centering the monument, but I have to tell you I've tried to photograph it on two or three occasions and never gotten an original viewpoint that I liked.

The view I like best of the Washington monument is framed by the colonade on the side of the Lincoln memorial.

I too like the human element in the first shot and agree with the brighter adjustment as chunk has presented. The sign is a little distracting - only because I kept wondering what it is..

I like the vertial of the monument and wonder what a closer vertical crop may do to accentuate this??
    Focus on the positive!
