Just got back from Lima, Peru

Hi all, I found my self constantly critiquing here and seldomly posting photos for critique only becuase I'm totally sick and tired of shooting my home town that and plus I ran out of ideas and things to look for, so I took some time off. Well I spent 2 weeks in Lima and I finally got some shots to share.
I don't wanna bombard the site with my threads so I'll start 2-3 per week or something like that so you won't get sick of me.

Here's my first shot. As always, I'd like to hear the good and the bad. Does this look like another ordinary shot or does it have anything?

P.S. I would recommend Lima to all. A beautiful city, with great people, weather, food and scenery.

I'd echo the comments I made on one of your photos earlier. This is good, but looks two dimensional and comparitively flat. I'd try and set this up so that your eye flows through from front to back with lots of three dimensional detail. Easier said than done.

It's decent, except that it's missing a subject. It's nice for potential background image of a PS expt.

What you needed here was someone standing right there in the center or close to that with a big smile or something. Here's a crazy example - I lifted this off of an NFL cheerleader site. A quick masking and pasting shows that with a (good) subject, the pic gets better.

Thanks Lava. Good suggestion. My DOF definately is lacking here. What drew me to this shot was the tones. I liked the brown, blue look with a small touch of vibrant colours from the houses on the cliff.

    GB1,
Nice chop. What a hotty!!! If she was there, I wouldn't have time to take stupid photos to begin with . lol. Good suggestion though. This shot definately needs a subject other than the big rock and the few houses.

Yes, the #1 of photography is that every photo looks better with a cheerleader.

Firstly, i dont like the black border on this type of image. It looks like a lovely place. The horizon is slightly leaning to the left. I think it is so nice but spoiled by the buildings on the cliff. Probably very nice to live in them but for our purposes a bit of a spoiler. Have done a bit of work on the pic to show you what i mean. Hope you dont mind. Have you more from there ?

Welcome back and from the photographs that you have shown here it seems to have been a very sucessful holiday photographically anyway.

I think all who have commented on this have given you some valid advice and points. However, while the image might look stronger or more interesting with a subject in the foreground, I find that the picture holds appeal for me in that the tones of the sand, the waves and white water, and the mountainous rocks in the distance breaking up into the grayish blue sky has a subtle and pleasant appeal. I think the composition is ok ( Horizon above center and the large piece of rock off to the third of the frame) The horizon might be tilted and I would have to get out my protracter to verify that, but for all intent and purpose it does not need correcting, I feel. While the image is not a jaw dropping wower, it does have a pleasant mood and appeal, and therefore is ok for me. I know this is not much of a critique, but sometimes a picture is just ok, and thats all it needs to be. As I said, others who have commented have already given you good advice on improving. Thanks for the heads -up on the vacation spot.

    Roberto,
Yeah, looking to the far right and the water line it definitely looks like the horizon is leaning left a bit. As far as the houses go, I actually like those but I still have other shots that were more zoomed like the one you've posted (and no I don't mind you cropping my shot). I also have a couple of Panoramas from the location. From that exact spot and way to right and left of it. Thanks for the feedback.

    Thanks Tom.

    Gary,
Those tones, the rough waters and everything else you've described so well were exactly what appealed to me about this shot.
No, in fact that was a good critique by you and the others as well. They've nicely put out what wasn't working and you filled in what you thought worked for this shot. So I got the best out of both worlds for this. I'm here to improve and I'd love to hear the bad with the good at every turn. Thanks Gary.
