Return to the Dock

I took a couple of props, other than my shoes. But because of the angle I was shooting at and the width of the dock none of them worked out. But boy did my feet get cold before I got done shooting.:eek:

I really like it Greg. I love the mood here and the shadow created by the moon light is awesome nicely done. There might be a bit of a green cast that the shot might work better without but that's it.

Nice and smooth with just the right contrast of the wooden dock and shoes.

This shot is very pleasing to the eye, and I'm not seeing too much green from my monitor, but I'm curious if this is an HDR type compilation of 2 or more shots, or if you used a graduated ND filter, because the few times I've tried similar exercises, the moon "blows out" long before the foreground becomes properly exposed.

I like the lighting very much! :thumbsup: I have to say if I tried this it would need to be a panoramic shot to get my number 15 size tennis shoe in the picture, Jeff :D

Beautiful shot. Maybe it's just the engineer in me, but it does seem odd that the reflection is so much brighter than what is being reflected. - TF

Thanks all. This is not an HDR. I ain't real good with those. I took a close up of the moon and resized it and replaced it in this shot. I also took a flash light and hit the shoes a couple of seconds during the exposure.
I didn't intend on using the shoes and had other props but due to shooting from the side of the dock and not the end I didn't have enough room for the props.

Ahh.. symbolism. Not a bad idea. The shoes are OK but I am left wondering what it means -- did the person take them off and jump in the water? I would prefer to see a lit candle (which would mean ?), an opened letter, ... a lot of possibilities.

Good exposure range btw - I can see everything.

Greg, I hate to sound like an old Gene Shalit movie review (i.e. "I LOVED IT!"), but... I love it! I really dig the green cast - works really nicely, on my screen, at least. Nice light painting, too.

May I inquire as to the technical specifics (exposure mode, shutter speed, ISO, etc.)?

Yes! Do tell us all the particulars of taking this shot. I absolutely love it, too. The only way I think it could be improved is by having a nude sitting in place of the shoe.
I have done similar things with film in the past, but that was such a complicated and delicate process of exposing the moon through a long lens (so it had the proper exposure and was larger in the final picture), then rewinding the film and fishing the tag back out in the dark, then reloading it to expose the film again with a standard lens, usually with a fisherman in the foreground. I, too, used a flashlight to highlight certain items during the long exposure. This gave it a nice, soft, warm appearance, like yours. The frames didn't always line up, however, and it was so much trouble, I only did it a couple of times.
But with digital and PhotoShop, or maybe Photomatix, it sould be much easier.

Thanks again all. Going back and looking at the EXIF this was shot at 14mm, ISO100, f/5.0 at 60sec. I shined the flashlight on the shoes maybe two seconds at best. Again, the moon was shot separately at 150mm, lassoed, placed in this shot and resized, replacing the blown out moon. I tweaked the WB slightly to get the color as you see here.

Very nice. Any time ive tried this i usualy end up with solid black picture with a tiny pinprick moon. Definatly goin to try some of the tricks youve mentioned next time, thanks for the education. I always like learning new things to try. GREAT SHOT

I love pictures of beautiful scenery and this one fits the bill. The only thing that throws me is how small the moon looks in the background considering how much light its reflecting across the water.

Thanks again, Yes the size of the moon was a small problem and I went back and forth a few times before I decided on this one. It is one of the reasons I posted it here to see if all felt it was the right size.
