Refraction & Reflection

Thought this shot was interesting, with the reflection of the face not on the glass but in the water and the light effect on both "refraction". Notice the sharks in the shadow's, too bad they weren't up close. Photo specs, ISO 200, 1/25s, f9. I added some color (blue) to call out the light streeks, the original included as well for purposes of critique. Thanks.

definitely and interesting eye catching shot. The reflection is very nice and clear. The thing that doesnt work for me is how muddyish the water is. There seems to be lots of spots from all the sand being worked up or it might be that the glass wasn't that clean that day. I like the approach and the capture but wish the water was bluer and clearer. I like the first take btw, with the blue tones.

The reflection is interesting and the way it is side by side with his face because of his head against the glass.. I agree the water or that particular area in the aquarium tank is not ideal, but the photo is very interesting and appealing to look at. I also like the first with the blue water.
I am curious as to your camera settings . . .in a dark place like an indoor aquarium it would be best to have a higher iso like 400 and to open the aperture up to about 5.6 as opposed to f9 you had it. Your shutter speed was only 1/25 which is too slow to get a good sharp shot while hand holding although the sharpness appears to be pretty good here.
Good shot and creative composition.

I tried some shots with higher ISO but was worried about adding more noise to the shot as there was already enough with all the sediment floating around. For this shot I was leaning against a wall to steady the camera, otherwise it would have neen all over the place. What I do sometimes is shoot of a couple of shots at thye same time hoping one will be sharper than the other else I put the camera on a short self timer and focus on holding the camera steady. I think I did the former here? I left the apperture at f9 for a sharper shot then I would have got at f5.6 and for more DOF. Thanks for the comments.

I lose quite a bit of clarity, too bad I didn't have a tripod on me, but then it wouldn't have been natural... alas...

Like the concept but agree that it would be a lot better if it were sharper. Understand on the noise issue.. my digital camera (Nikon D200) has ISO settings up to I believe 1200, but the noise is so bad... the shots look like they were painted in sand. But there are programs that remove noise. Also, bracing against a wall to steady the shot or a vibration reduction lens could help.

Anyway -- nice grab, good eye for opportunity.

Good idea and I like both compositions.

The side by side (or top and bottom) comparisons accent the color variations between the photos in an unfortunate fashion. The quality of the color across the face is a weak point.

I believe both photographs could be improved easily with post processing, though the refraction falling across the face might be difficult to get to resolve to a more satisfactory color.

Thanks everyone for the encouraging comments. The next time I'm at such an aquarium I'll see if I can get such a shot again. I must say with the thick curved glass and water it takes reflection to another level which is what makes it interesting. Unfortunately I'm not so good at post processing yet and I only work with Nikon NX which is limited. Thanks again. Peter
