Re: QM2 and Golden Princess
The first image is really striking, great menacing sky and I like the fact that you have included a lot more sky than water in this shot, there's also more space to either side of the ship and I like the small vessel in the foreground travelling in the opposite direction. Great shot!

The samll vessel is a lifeboat at anchor.
The QE2 is a good photo but I would have left more space in front so that the boat moves into this area. There seems to be more space at the stern. I do like the bouy and the lifeboat in the picture and the menacing skies and the fact that there is not too much water in the foreground.
The Golden Princess - again not enough space in front for the boat to move into and the Isle of White Cat crossing the lower bow spoils it a bit.
Keep them coming
Re: QM2 and Golden Princess
Good point Roger! Still, a nice contrast between the sizes of the different vessels.

Re: QM2 and Golden Princess
I like both, and think the lifeboat adds to the scene greatly. Most people do not realize how big this really is, and the lil one gives it great perspective.
PS- you guys are making me miss the coastal life. Guess I need to plan a beach trip!
Re: QM2 and Golden Princess
The lifeboat is 50ft long - not so lttle
Re: QM2 and Golden Princess
Roger,
Little is relative:p Anywho, the pictures are great. The tight crop I think works well, and having more sky in the picture helped drastically! Way to go and some great shots!

Re: QM2 and Golden Princess
Thanks for the comments everyone, I really appreciate it!
I did try to remember less sea and more sky, and I think both of these worked out much better than my usual attempts. Now all I have to remember is to try leave space in front.
Am going down to Calshot again on Saturday as there are a few liners in, will be the first real try out of my new camera, will post the results although not sure what to expect yet as it is far more advanced than the cam I used to take these particular ones. Should be interesting!

Re: QM2 and Golden Princess
The second one doesn't do much for me but the first is great!
Re: QM2 and Golden Princess
50 ft is little!! Look at that thing behind it! It must be 1/2 mile long :D :P

Pictures do not do this ship justice, the size has got to be seen to believed.
Gives you a better idea:
Length: 1,132 feet
Beam: 135 feet
Beam at Bridge Wings: 147.5 feet
Draft: 32 feet 10 inches
Height (Keel to Funnel): 236.2 feet
Gross Tonnage: Approximately 151,400 gross tons
Passengers: 2,620
Crew: 1,253
Top Speed: Approximately 30 knots (34.5 mph)
Power: 157,000 horsepower, environmentally friendly, gas turbine/diesel electric plant
Propulsion: Four pods of 21.5 MW each; 2 fixed and 2 azimuthing
Strength: Extra thick steel hull for strength and stability for Atlantic crossings
Stabilizers: Two sets
Cost: Estimated $800 million dollars
Some comparisons:
# QM2 is five times longer than Cunard's first ship, Britannia (230 ft.)
# QM2 is 113 feet longer than the original Queen Mary
# QM2 is more than twice as long as the Washington Monument is tall (550 ft.)
# QM2 is 147 feet longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall (984 ft.)
# QM2 is more than 3 ½ times as long as Westminster Tower (Big Ben) is high (310 ft.)
# QM2 is only 117 feet shorter than the Empire State Building is tall (1248 ft.)
# QM2 is more than three times as long as St. Paul's Cathedral is tall (366 ft.)
# QM2 is as long as 41 double-decker London buses (31 ½ ft. each)
# QM2's whistle will be audible for 10 miles

Julia,
Approximately what time are they going past Calshot. I will be launching my 16ft Speed boat on Saturday to test a fix to the engine.
Re: QM2 and Golden Princess
They are all three due to go out at 5.00pm. I have found that they almost always go out late and then it takes some time for them to actually reach Calshot. What I usually do is aim to be at Calshot around half an hour later than the given time and I've never missed one yet. Usually still have to wait around a while but it's not very long.
The ones all going out at 5pm are Aurora, Legend of The Seas and Sea Princess.
If you go here:
http://www.hytheferry.co.uk/extra.mh...unt-num=104154
Scroll to the bottom and click on the full schedule link, you can download a list of all the passenger ships for Southampton, it has arrivals/departures and which berth they are in, really handy for if you want to see a particular ship (I have it printed out lol)
If I see a speed boat go past around that time I'll give you a wave!

Re: QM2 and Golden Princess
I like the 1st shot more than the 2nd magnum. I think it's got alot more going for it. The clouds and the juxtaposition with the smaller vessel just illustrates how big this thing is. The only problem I see is that it has a bit of a red tint to it. It might be my comp. though.
Good work though.
I hope you don't mind but I took the tint out and gave it a subtle S curv in photoshop to ad a bit more contrast.

Thanks Leels, and no I don't mind at all. It wasn't until I had a look at the changes you did that I realised there actually IS a slight tint of red to the original. It's definitely not your comp!
