Does this work? I have the idea in my head, but not sure it is translating well.

    Re: Help me out here...

    Adina,

I like this, but I think i would crop a large area off the top. Right now, the person isn't the main subject for me, and if the main subject is the trees, there isn't enough intrest for me in them. Even cropping the trees by a quater or even a half, I think you might get a strong image. Besides that, the black and white tones are stunning, and this could be a very effective pic if cropped right.

    Nice shot,

    Jared

If I see what you're going for, there are two possibilities for composition here:

    1. The model (your photogenic daughter I presume)moved closer to the tree line. This image has more space than works between her and the tree backdrop. She gets lost in the wrong part of the frame. You might even want to play with keystoning the trees or forcing the perspective with her at the critical point.

    2. Lose the trees, except perhaps way off in the distance or cut the DOF way back (long lens or as long as you've got with the widest open lens you can manage). Put the child in various sectors of the frame against blurry but recognizable background. Bokeh, bokeh, bokeh...

I like your use of the edge of the frame to ground her to the picture but my eye wanders off looking for something. This could almost even be something high-keyed (actual or PS'd) or even with some flare.

Keeping it generally like it is though really says something about that focus of childhood and that comfort kids can have anywhere. I personally would play a lot with the contrast as well either towards the dreamy cloudy range or towards the harsher under exposed range.

Hope this isn't too far off, and might be some help?

Am looking forward to one of your wonderful final compositions.

    another possibility

If you can do another image, this would be great if the field went out to infinity - or there were flowers in the field - with the sky in the background. I could see this image with your daughter in the same place - same size - with the horizon in the background.

Just a thought. Oh - btw - I like the image a lot, but not the tree at the end.

my impression is large and small or tiny and massive, if you will.

make the trees all the same type and a solid wall by panning to the right. the child will become more of a focal point and will be representative of the opposite representation of the trees.

    make sense?

    Dear Adina,

I would agree with drg, wide open and on your daughter(?). That would reduce the background to merely tones, a good idea in this case. The other thing I might suggest, and I don't say it would work with this composition, is go for the infrared look. If this was color, your job is easier, just color mixer, up the green and red to your liking, and then do softglow. If it is black and white, well, I don't know how to do it that way, maybe up the brightness and then softglow. I still am unsure that infrared would work for this, and I am not sure that was what you were going for. Good idea.
