    Practicing with Speed

Capturing the sense of speed is quite challenging, something I need to work on. Here is the latest attempt: go-carts.

    Your thoughts/comments, please.

I like it. How did you do it? Follow the cart with the camera when you took the picture.

    Re: Practicing with Speed

Hi, thanks for the comments. Yes, I practiced "panning" to capture the traditional depiction of speed. I posted 3 images several months ago of bicycles, but reversed the subject to show speed; I blurred the bikes and kept the background in focus. However, that did not go over well at all on this forum. I did not receive positive comments with those attempts. So,...I resorted to the fall back traditional shot.

    I appreciate your comments.

    CF,
You did a real good job of keeping the driver in focus through your move, that's something that I've found the hardest to do with shots like this. My only real issue with it is how grainy it is.

In the same theme, this is a similar shot that I took the other weekend at Watkin's Glen Speedway.

All fun shots here folks. There's a little blur on the cars on all of them but it's almost impossible to get them totally clean - these are respectable. CF, the only thing about the bottom shot is that it's so grainy.. looks like you had to lighten it up quite a bit.

    Hi GB1,

Yes, did lighten it up and with the ISO at 1600 I guess that is the consequences. Thanks for the comments.

I think your shutter speed is a little too slow for that reason, you've blurred the background well - but with blurred hands and helmet there's little to rest the eye on that isn't moving.
Of course, you have succeeded in capturing a lot of movement ...

A side note, I've seen photos in print that I would have rejected because nothing was sharp - to the point of a two-page spread in the GFoS programme, and that has blown highlights too, even on the tyres !

So take my opinion wiht a pinch of salt, it appears editors will accept images that I wouldn't bother submitting

P.S. how about some more in the sports forum?

    SmartWombat:

Thanks very much for your comments. I wish I had the opportunity to go right back out there and shoot this again. But, alas it was taken while visiting northern California. I do not have much by way of sports shots, the bicycle race was an annual event. I am going to the track over the summer, maybe that will provide opportunities for shooting the ponies. So to speak.
