Here are a couple of pics from a recent trip to Portugal. Any critiques would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Chris,

I think that your first picture is very good (actually, very very good!!). I love your composition, the color saturation and the overall lighting. The clouds in the sky add a lot too. Achieving this kind of sky is not that easy at all. My only concern is about the thing at the extreme left which appears to be a dock. I'd crop it as it act like a slight distraction when I look carefully.

I am not very found of your second picture. The composition is ok but the strong color cast (ambient artificial lighting??) doesn't suit the scene really well. Also, there is a stange halo in the upper left corner (lense flare? dust on your lense front element??).

    thanks for sharing

I like both pix. The bottom pic has a good feel but appears to be soft OMC. The top could benefit from a curves adjustment. I have taken the liberty to adjust your pic.

    Dear Chris,

Your first pic is very nice. It is one of those nice "overlooking the bay with fishing boats" type picture. I really like the cloud formations too. You got a good perspective on this one. I would say however that the water looks a little brown to me. It doesn't make the picture appealing in that aspect, but it does not ruin the feeling of the picture. The second picture is interesting. Did you use daylight balanced film? It has the look that daylight film has when used at night, that warm orange glow about the whole pic. I am not sure whether I like it or not :p .

Great shots here. My fav, as voiced from pretty much the majority of other posters, is the first one. The strong foreground subject of the boats/ocean and the beautiful sky and clouds create a perfect and very appealing composition and set of colors. The second one, though I love the 'warm' feeling, the flare on the left is distratcing, and also, a tighter zoom in on the city sky line on the right hand side would be a nice pic.

    Great shots though,

    All,
Thanks for the comments and suggestions. The first shot I really liked when I took it. I haven't decided what I think about the second shot. I like the warmth (was taken at night with my digital rebel at a shutter speed of about 8 seconds). Obviously I didn't like the flare, but didn't look closely enough at the shot until later. I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on this image.

    Thanks,
    Chris

This version looks more dramatic somehow, maybe because the clouds and sky are so prevelant. The bottom boat looks a little cramped however.. I like the orig. one better in that respect. The night image looks a little too surreal for me, but it is different. Both are nice shots. I spent some time in Europe, and it seems like there's a lot more photo subjects and opportunities there than in the USA. I guess all that architecture and history makes for an interesting pallete.

Nice photos Chris. I’m partial to the first photo. Great job capturing the scene. The cloud formations really add to the feel. I would love to see that part of the world. The second shot is kind of neat. It almost seems spooky to me.

I have looked a few times at these and finally decided that I had something to say

    I like both.

I prefer Terry's version of the top photo makes it a lot more powerfull and the crop is much better

The bottom I like very much and even though its soft its so different I thouroughly enjoy it.

    Keep the photos comming.
