Gorgeous location. I probably would have used a longer shutter speed to blur the water a bit to give it a calmer appearance, though the choppy waves kind of give a good sense of wind-chill.

Maybe some other center of interest would be good too, like a car, or someone fishing?

I like it but I think that since its more in the center then rule of thirds it could be more interesting.

    Hello GeeNine-

You have a lovely scene here. My real wish is that you had been at this spot about an hour earlier, when the light was all over the range and valley leading up to it.

When taking landscape pictures with gorgeous scenery like this its easy to take a "good" picture, since it's all right there in front of you. Waiting for the right light is what makes great images. If you're local go back up there and camp out, take your time and get a variety of shots as the light changes at the end of the day. Summer being what it is up there you only get so many shots at that right?

With the light as it is in this shot I would have lowered the camera angle and brought the foreground into play more (since the sky lacks any truly interesting details) and adjusted the exposure to make it feel less dusky. That might also break up the composition a bit more and make it look a less centered. Mr. Yuck makes an interesting suggestion in slowing down the shutter speed and closing down the aperture to smooth out the water, but without an ND filter that's going to lead to blown highlights in the sky and mountaintops. Still, worth some experimenting if this is a place you can easily return to.

    Good effort, Keep shootin'!

Actually the "evening" and "morning" light up here lasts a lot longer than it does in the lower 48. This was actually shot in the early morning(about 4am)and then only after an hour of waiting for the sun to actually hit the mountains in the center of the frame. If I would have waited for the valley to be lit there would be no semblance at all of early or late light it would have had harsh "afternoon" light which lasts from about 7am until midnight or so.

I probably did leave a bit too much sky but I liked the soft pink light on the clouds up there. I also centered the mountains in the background because I wanted too many elements in the frame as usual. There wasn't anything really exciting in the foreground but those rocks, I don't know if more rocks would have helped things.

Wow, what a great location! I think the photo works really well, perhaps a slight crop from the top, but only slight.

The second photo, the rock blends in with the water a bit. Perhaps a shorter shutter speed, but maybe lighting considerations would've prevented this.

Good work none the less. Keep it up!
